Because of our originally being located in the Helderberg Mountains of New York State (just SW of Albany, NY), and with the purchase of our first two Siberians in 1977, HELDERBERG HUSKY KENNEL was born, an adventure which was to become a "full time" hobby lasting almost thirty years. In August of 1999 we sold our home of thirty years outside of Albany and moved to our log cabin on the shores of Schroon Lake in the Adirondack Mountains of NYS. Yes, dreams really do come true . . . and another adventure was ahead of us! Little did we realize how much of an adventure awaited us. On September 6, 2001 our "Adventure" became a nightmare. We had a horrible house fire... and lost most everything. We saved four Alaskan Klee Kai (Expectant Mothers) who on schedule in turn presented us with new life... all healthy puppies and a sign of hope.

Also some important papers, sentimental photographs and snap shots were saved long - all be it soggy and wet! Closely resembling its ancestors, this breed could easily be mistaken for a miniature Husky, making it obvious to see why this little guy is such a hot commodity. Lucky for you, if you don’t already own one of these pups, we are here to share some details about it that should hold you over (at least for now). The Alaskan Klee Kai has been on the up and up ever since it originated in the 1970s.

The clever idea came from an Alaskan woman by the name of Linda Spurlin. After visiting relatives in Oklahoma, she came across a small husky and decided to bring it back to her home state. By mixing the Siberian and Alaskan Husky with other small breeds who shared similar features, the Alaskan Klee Kai was born! Although the Alaskan Klee Kai could easily be mistaken for a miniature Sibe, its personality is quite different. This pup is loveable and friendly, but when it comes to meeting new people the Klee Kai can be very shy and reserved. And while it loves its family and becomes very attached, in a group of people this breed is the perfect example of a “wallflower.” In a comfortable setting or environment, this pup is back to its usual fun loving and active self. But let’s not get confused, this breed does have a wild side. During its younger years, this dog is full of vim and vigor and can develop what we like to call “Small Dog Syndrome.” This is when a dog believes that it is the humans’ pack leader.

This can be avoided by providing plenty of obedience training and positive reinforcement with treats during its early developmental stages.
