Patricia Warner, general manager of Bowest Appliances in Calgary, says they can’t keep enough one-piece models in stock. Bowest specializes in reconditioned and scratch and dent models from North American manufacturers such as Frigidaire and Whirlpool. Both brands make top-load combination washer dryer units, from 1.5 to 3.8 cubic foot capacities. Jordan Fraser, sales manager at Trail Appliances, says the one-piece washer dryer combo has been around for the past 20 to 30 years. Now, with apartment-style condo buyers demanding in-suite laundry facilities, people are also looking for the more efficient front-loading units in a compact size.

“With front-loading washers, you buy the washer and dryer separately. Fraser says many condos built with closets or cupboards for laundry equipment still have enough depth for larger format machines from North American manufacturers such as Maytag, Whirlpool and LG. The compact machines are mostly available in white, with Asko just entering the stainless steel market with a colour called “Titanium.” Consumers are ditching the once trendy cherry red and blue washer dryer sets for metallic tones to match their kitchen appliances. Unlike top-loading washers with both an agitator and a drum that can become horribly unbalanced when heavy wash items aren’t distributed properly, front-load units have less moving parts and run more quietly, a highly desirable attribute when you have neighbours below. “When the machine is installed, you want to make sure the levelling legs have really firm contact with the floor. When you have heavy laundry spinning at 1200 RPM, you’ll have vibration when there’s even a little bit of play in the legs,” says Fraser.

Many manufacturers offer matching platforms to raise front loading appliances to a more manageable height, however Warner recommends against using them in a condo. “They’re hollow and when a heavy load is in a spin it will make more noise. If you want a platform, build a solid, heavy wood platform,” she suggests. There are ventless dryers on the market for condo units with no outside dryer vent, with chambers that must be emptied of condensation or will drain moisture out the pipe shared with the washer, but with a two- or three-hour cycle, these machines are not ideal for families with lots of laundry to do. Warner says there are two-in-one combination machines available, that wash, spin and dry all in the same machine; however, one load can take up to four hours to complete. Fraser says compact models, while smaller, cost more than full-size washer dryer sets, start at approximately $1,500, with some of the European models priced at $2,000 and higher for a pair.
