Released in 2005, the Atmosphere Air Purifier was the first air cleaner certified as asthma and allergy friendly in 2009 by the partnership of the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America (AAFA) and the Allergy Standards Limited (ASL), an international research organization. Quixtar also donated an Atmosphere Air Purifier to the reality show "Extreme Home Make-Over" for the Thompson Family episode. Atmosphere advertising claims it is "better than HEPA" but there is no supporting evidence since it only meets the performance standards of an AHAM AC-1 air cleaner that eliminates up to 99.99% of particles down to 0.01 microns.  Technically there is no commercial filtration system that is better than HEPA.  The unit has also been awarded a U.S. Department of Energy Energy Star® rating. The Quixtar web site also claims that the Atmosphere Air Purifier was "ranked among the best air purification systems" in a December 2007 issue of "a leading US consumer magazine" although no references are provided to the magazine or the study.

Pricing Info and Availability The Amway/Quixtar air purifier price fluctuates, but it typically retails for between $600 and $860, although in some markets where there is limited competition it is considerably higher. Replacement filters are available only through authorized dealers and also have a wide price range that averages around $150 for the HEPA, $80 for the carbon and can cost up to $500 a year to maintain both filters if run regularly as suggested by the manufacturer.
