Malone has played in 18 games during his entire collegiate career — with eight rebounds, seven points and one assist — and the team won every game. Sure he only totaled 30 minutes of action, but that doesn't take away from his impact. Now, he's willing to give back to the fans. Malone, who is a sports marketing major, used his education to help sell T-shirts featuring his face and his legendary headband to his more than 24,000 followers on Twitter.
Malone was willing to talk about his shirt and his time with Kentucky on a phone interview with Perform Media. When did you first get the idea for the T-Shirt? “My friend works at a shirt printing company, and he always said ‘let me make you a shirt, let me make you a shirt.’ And during the NCAA Tournament the whole headband thing really caught on. I think I just thought the fans would really like it and so in four days I turned the whole thing around and now we’re printing T-shirts.” What has the reception been? “It’s been all over Twitter. I’ve never got this big of a reaction of something on Twitter. More people than I could have ever imagined have seen the shirt. And we are getting a lot of purchases. I’m donating 25 percent of whatever comes in to the Autism Society of the BlueGrass.” Have you been involved with them before? “I haven't, but my family has always been involved with autism and helping people out who have autism, and it’s always been a family thing and I thought it’d be a good way to give back.”
You're well known for your headband. When did that start? “It started this year at our Big Blue Madness. I did a funny dance and then I had really big hair at the time, but then I got a haircut. And I was getting ready to walk out on the court without my headband and my teammates were like ‘what do you mean you aren’t going to wear your handband? And then it kind of turned into like a thing where the fans really liked it and opposing fans hated it. And it was funny how many fans when I walked into opposing arenas would be like, 'Hey Sam take that headband off you’re never going to play. What’s the headband for? You’re not collecting any sweat.’ That kind of took the headband popularity and then I started retweeting people who said negative things to me about the headband and it got really funny on Twitter. I think a lot of people enjoyed that.” What do you say to people who mocked you for sitting on the bench wearing a headband? “I would just ask them how many T-shirts they’ve sold.”
What's it been like playing with guys who have already succeeded in the NBA, or, like the seven players yesterday, have NBA potential? “It’s been incredible to see how the process works at Kentucky with guys taking off and going to the NBA and you celebrate your relationships with them. I talk to those guys all the time. Did you ever consider transferring to a school where you'd play more minutes? “I always wanted to play. I had three knee surgeries in high school, one in college, that kind of limited me. I had thought about transferring many times, but I was happier with my role here at UK than starting at another school." What's your most memorable moment playing at Kentucky? “Probably winning the national championship my freshman year. That was a good experience.” What's the future hold for you? “Like I said, I’m a major in sports marketing. I thought about business school, maybe going back to business school in a couple years. But it’s been five days since the season ended so I’m still new to the job market and still trying to feel things out.
