Lackawanna County schools head back to class this week Crews battle a fire at Kennedy Tire and Auto on Cedar Avenue Friday evening. Crews were called to the scene at 8 p.m. and found the building fully engulfed in flames. Image Gallery for Crews called to fire at Scranton tire and auto shop A fire destroyed a business in South Scranton on Friday night, and fire inspectors from the city fire and police departments are working to determine a cause. The fire was reported shortly before 8 p.m. at Kennedy Tire & Auto, 1408 Cedar Ave. A neighbor reported seeing smoke near the front of the structure, and when crews arrived shortly thereafter, the building was engulfed in flames, Scranton Fire Department acting Assistant Chief Jim Cooney said. About a half hour after the call came in, smoke — visible from blocks away — still billowed from the building and fire licked through the roof. Crowds of people gathered along Cedar Avenue to watch as fire crews battled the flames.
Roads around the fire scene were closed as firefighters attacked from three sides. A ladder truck was deployed in the parking lot beside the building and sprayed water from above. Other firefighters set up on Cedar Avenue and behind the building and sprayed the building from the ground. After 9 p.m., Mary Ann Cruise, who lives in the 300 block of Cherry Street near the auto shop, stood along Schimpf Court behind the building with a handful of others. Much of the heavy smoke had dissipated and fire no longer poked from the collapsed roof of the building, though an orange glow from inside the building was visible at times. Ms. Cruise said she was sitting inside her home earlier that evening when she heard a loud bang and then the sirens. She walked outside as emergency personnel started to arrive. “The firetrucks started coming, and I don’t know if there were flames first and then the bang, but it went up really fast,” Ms. Cruise said. Acting Assistant Chief Cooney said crews had the fire under control by about 10 p.m., though firefighters were still on the scene at 11 p.m. and would remain a while longer.
