Something lots of people face actually, hopefuly, I'll try my best to help increase it as much as possible. The key to the good performance is: Your FSX settings, it does not necessarily mean that you will get the nice graphics you want by just settings all the sliders to the max thing, there are useless details you may not want, which may not give a notable visual effect, you may want to let these somehow low to get good FPS, it's all about balancing it, a balance between what your PC gives to FSX, and what your FSX gives to your PC. First things first, before getting deeper, something you may need to know is that turning on the DX10 option may let your FSX run faster, may not make sense, but I still have the video on my Youtube channel, before and after DX10, great and notable change in the Frames per second, consider switching the DX10 on, if you wish to see the video
, I may post it on the FS2004 page soon. Let's get step by step to the settings that will probably give you the good balance: - Target framerate: The name says it, its the maximum frames your FSX can run under, if you set it to 25, your FSX will run with a max. Villeroy And Boch Toilet Seat Sparesof 25 FPS, if it is set to 30, your FSX will run with a max. 48 Fluorescent Light Bulbs Home Depotof 30 FPs, etc....Digital Camera Repair CarlsbadThe bad thing: It limits your FPS, but the good thing is also: it limits your FPS, how come?complexed scenery may need alot from your PC, rather than  the PC dealing with the lots of complexed scenery details one time, the Simulator will limit itself to specific FPS and thereby specific details to deal with, giving the simulator to load the sceneries in better FPS.* The point here is
: if you have something of the I processors, ( I3, I5 or I7 ), set that to unlimited, if you have something older and slower than the I processors , set it to the LOWEST FPS you can normally see, it is a good option to set it to unlimited if you experience notably changing FPS ( 10 FPS then suddenly 37 FPS then suddenly 27 FPS in the same position ). - Filtering and Anti-Aliasing: Anisotropic, and Anti-Aliasing on, they have a good effect on your graphics. - Global Texture Resolution: Should always be on max. - Preview Direct X 10: As I mentioned above, it may give you BETTER graphics and BETTER performance, and may do the vise versia, something related to the graphic cards. - Lens flare: It gives a great view from up, if you are flying an Airliner or something that flies high, turn it on, if you will fly on, keep it off, it uses FPS. - Light Bloom: I don't turn that on, uses lots of FPS, may give a nice view though. - Advanced Animations: Leave it on, will disable you from seeing lots of good animations.
- Informational text: For laptops and normal desktops, use continuous, change it if you have a very wide monitor. Next is the cockpit settings- Default cockpit view: :)- Shown cockpit tooltips: :)- High resolution 3D cockpit: Leave it on- 2D panel transparency: :) To the exterior settings,- Aircraft casts shadow on ground: Uses FPS, having some bugs, leave it off- Aircraft casts shadow on itself: A nice one, I usually keep it on, but if you are using a very complex Aircraft like the PMDG, leave it off.- Aircraft landing lights illuminate on the ground: On, one of the best effects in FSX, may use FPS but worth it. To the sceneries, terrain and water:- Level of detail radius: Medium will be a good balance- Mesh complexity and Mesh resolution: both for 50%- Texture resolution: 50 CM will be good- Water effect: Truly one of the best graphic effects, Set it to 2.x if you are on one of the I processors or a Core 2 duo , if you are on abit older processor, consider checking its effect on your performance, it depends on the amount of water, if you're flying on a place with lots of water, set it to 1.x , otherwise to 2.x- Land detail textures: Nice one, activate it
To the scenery objects,- Scenery complexity: Extremely Dense.- Autogen density: has a great impact on your FPS, depends on  the place you fly at, but do not set it to the lowest setting, set it somewhere between the middle and the highest- Ground scenery shadows: Deactivate it, especially if you are flying in a place with lots of buildings- Special effects detail: Should always be " Max " Off to the weather, and to the visual settings-Cloud draw distance: keep it 110km, consider reducing it if you get less FPS-Thermal Visualization: Deactivate it-Cloud detail: Worth, activate it, you may want to deactivate it if you get less FPS as well, just like the draw distance- Cloud coverage density: Worth as well, leave it in a high settingTo the Simulation settings:Download winds aloft: ActivateDisable turbulence: :)Rate at which weather changes over time: Set it to high To traffic, aviation traffic-Airliner traffic: never set it to over 50%, great bad impact on the FPS- General aviation: Same as the above- Airport vehicles: Somewhere near 50% will be good
