Slamdance Film Festival added a micro-shorts competition to its 2015 lineup, TheWrap has learned. The independent film organization partnered up with camera company Digital Bolex to produce “Fearless Filmmaking: Art on Your Own Terms,” a block of micro-shorts which will be shot on the company’s D16 cameras screened at the January, 2015 festival. See photos: TheWrap's 2014 ShortList Film Fest Rocks YouTube Space LA The curated group of micro-shorts will be judged by Amber Benson (“Buffy the Vampire Slayer”), director Todd Berger (“It’s a Disaster”), music cinematographer Laura Merians, Emmy nominated writer Kent Osborne (“Adventure Time”) and Oscar-winning producer Damon Russell (“Curfew”), each of whom is a Slamdance alumni. The best micro-short film will be announced at the festival’s Closing Night Awards Ceremony on Jan. 29. In addition to the block of shorts, Digital Bolex creative director and camera co-developer Elle Schneider will moderate a “Fireside Chat” panel focused on diverse perspectives behind the camera.

Selected Slamdance filmmakers will receive a Digital Bolex D16 loaner package, including a camera, lenses, and post-software, to create their film. Participants will have six weeks to shoot a finished film, which will premiere at Slamdance. “We are excited to be partnering with Digital Bolex to offer such an inventive micro-shorts filmmaking competition to our independent filmmakers alongside this year’s Film Festival.

Bushwick Film Festival#’s Creative Projects Coordinator, Joseph Willwerth, recently checked out a Rooftop Films screening, below is his recap of the evening: “The innovative outdo...or-­movie­-screening-­outfit, Rooftop Films, gave the curious attendees of June 15th’s ＃ShortFilmProgram, a show likely to convert first time Rooftoppers into lifelong devotees. I wasn’t sure what to expect from a free program of never-­before­-heard-­of shorts, but the serious, topical lineup of stories packed a wallop. Film after film, with very little time to do so, surprisingly delivered complete thoughts on subjects such as gender non­conformity, unjust incarceration, violence inflicted upon blacks, and single motherhood in an Argentinean mining town. Among the newsworthy, was a study of humans that many are likely to recognize and experience, every time they are in the presence of their own parents. In Small Talk, director Hilary Fitzgerald captures her parents and her parent’s friends, chatting and hanging out—that’s it.

They talk about their lazy neighbors, they talk about regretting their lack of sexual exploration when they were younger, and they agree, always, that when the evening comes, they will be drinking heavily. It’s like watching a Cassavetes picture, but without all the stress. The film is so charming and simple, that it made me want to pick up a camera and direct my very own film, right then and there. Of course, not many will be able to turn their sleepy personal yarns, into a movie with the insight and humor of Small Talk—but the 6 minute viewing will at least bless you with the inspiration to go out and try. During the film's closing credits, it was revealed to a glowing audience that Hilary’s longtime friend and neighbor, and co-star of Small Talk, Bob, had recently passed away.
