I was particularly interested in the items related to fertility since we have had problems getting some of our Borzoi girls in a "maternal way" and cannot seem to find an affordable kibble that does not contain flaxseed, soy or peas. The "grain free" diet craze has caused so many dog food companies to add at least one (or all!) of these into their recipe. But since our Silken Windhound girls have not had much of an issue getting in a motherly way, I don't think I can point at the kibble. It is always a good idea to read proposed legislation thoroughly and imagine how it would affect responsible breeders and owners. While regulating animal breeding, especially dog and cat breeding, can seem like a good idea, in many cases, the legislation is worded in such a way that the regulation would end up harming small,responsible, hobby breeders, instead of stopping large scale puppy and kitten mills. Requiring small, hobby breeders to comply with USDA breeding standards would often bankrupt the responsible breeders. To breed enough dogs or cats to make enough money to be able to afford the facilities required, breeders would have to start full scale, large breeding businesses instead of keeping their animals in their home as pets. Educating our lawmakers in the subtle differences is the only way to protect our breeds and their stewards.
