The streets have been selected. The contractor has been hired. The schedule has been set. The Skyline Slurry Seal Project will be happening June 28 – July 7th. Street improvements are happening in your neighborhood, Skyline residents. Yes, this may be a slight inconvenience to you, but just think of the nice roads that will be a result of this public works project. Take a deep breathe; it’s going to be worth it. To refresh your memory, slurry seal is a thin layer of asphalt and sand that are put down on the roadways to repair them and increase the longevity of the road. It might help to revisit our previous post to learn more.  And to answer the most common question that accompanies a slurry seal project – “Why isn’t my road being worked on? It’s in a lot worse condition than the roads that were selected?” – it helps to think of it in terms of home siding repair. It’s easier and more cost-efficient to repaint the siding to increase the longevity of your house than it is to replace the siding.

The same applies for repairing roads. The slurry seal can repair a lot more roads for less money versus a total rebuild of a road. Some streets aren’t in good enough condition to benefit from applying a slurry seal. The goal of the Anacortes Public Works Department is to repair and repave all the deteriorating streets in town. We have to prioritize and do what makes sense based on budget and other work happening in the area. “This is the first time in 17 years we’ve done a slurry seal project. We welcome feedback on this project to help future repairs of this nature to run even smoother.” —Fred Buckenmeyer, Public Works Director Since this project is imminent, what does a Skyline resident need to know in order to minimize the inconvenience? First of all, the project is slated to start June 28 and end July 7th. These dates are weather dependent.

For example, if your street is scheduled for June 30 and it rains, then your repair day goes to the bottom of the list, i.e. July 8th. Scag Tiger Cat Light KitIf you’re leaving town during the time the project is happening, remove your car or RV or trailer from the street, otherwise it will be towed at your expense. Signs will be up in plenty of time to notify residents to remove vehicles, and there will be a door hanger provided to each residence giving 24 hours notice before work will occur. We recognize that this project is happening over a holiday weekend.

We ask that as a resident of Skyline, you be aware of travel plans happening within this time and move vehicles if out of town during the time the project is happening in your neighborhood. Third, trash day in Skyline is July 1. Please put your solid waste can at the regular time, if for some reason we can’t pick up your trash we will get it the next week . Since Skyline doesn’t have any sidewalks, and this project calls for walking a short distance from car to home, we’re hoping residents will be patient, tolerant and helpful of their fellow neighbors walking through yards. We’d encourage everyone in Skyline to work out a buddy system during this time. It’s a great opportunity to meet your neighbors and lean on your community. One idea is to swap parking spots with neighbors on adjacent streets while your repair is happening, and then your neighbor can park in your space when it is their turn. There will be plenty of public outreach notifying residents of scheduling, rescheduling (hopefully not necessary), maps of repair and who to contact with questions.

There will be door hangers, direct mailers, sandwich board signs that will be strategically placed as the project progresses,  maps that will show where repairs are happening, and an electronic trailer reader board. The best way to get the best up-to-date notifications and news is to sign up for social media. Public Works has Facebook, Twitter and Instagram accounts. These will be the most immediate way to share information on a moment’s notice. This is it, Skyline! Repairs are coming, and your roads are going to be much better.
