Safe Kids Huntsville serves all of north Alabama. Huntsville Hospital has been the lead agency for Safe Kids Huntsville since 1997. Safe Kids accomplishes its mission through community involvement − providing public education programs that highlight safety measures necessary to keep children safe, healthy and out of the emergency room.

Safe Kids Huntsville periodically sponsors community safety fairs and buckle-up events, where car seats are inspected and installed. This is Child Passenger Safety Week. The emphasis for CPS week this year is the importance of registering your car seat and what to know/do about recalls. With support from General Motors, a study was conducted by Safe Kids Worldwide to understand how families manage car seat registrations and recalls. Among the findings from the study that are most telling are that 80% of parents felt it was important to register their car seat, 68% knew why they were sending in the card, however only 42% reporting having actually done so.

What’s the point in registering? Registering your child’s car seat is the best way for you to learn about a recall in the most timely and dependable manner; directly from the manufacturer. If there has been a recall on your child’s seat, and if you’ve already registered, you will automatically receive the parts needed to fix the problem. But, if you haven’t registered, then you will have to request the parts. Manufacturers’ models will vary causing different price ranges, yet the level of safety each car seat delivers does not vary – they are all safe when installed correctly.

The difference depends on the baby’s optimal age range. In general, infant car seats are engineered for babies less than one-year old and less than about 35 pounds. Experts suggest babies be placed in a rear-facing position at this age and weight to ensure maximum safety. Booster car seats are for older children (usually exceeding one year and 25 pounds) and offer the same safety standards. There are several types of booster seats (Harnessed booster seats, Belt positioning booster seats, and no back booster seats) each one’s usage depends on the weight and height of the child. Convertible car seats have the ability to be used forward and rear facing when installed. Rear-facing positions are used until the child is around 40+ pounds before it is turned forward for continued usage. Your baby’s height and weight need consideration when choosing a car seat. The convertible seats can then be used in a forward-facing position until the child exceeds the specific seat’s height/weight limit.
