“Almost all of them can succeed at some level of the hunt test game. To me, a well-trained gun dog should be successful as a hunt test dog. A gun dog should be out with his handler hunting waterfowl or upland game during the hunting season. In the off-season, that gun dog has a chance to continue with his work in a hunt test program and keep his skills sharp.” Occasionally, a dog will demonstrate remarkable talents of marking ability, a great nose, and great retrieving ability to compete in AKC field trials, where Lonny has achieved success as a field trial trainer. “There’s no reason to breed a litter of Labrador retriever puppies unless you’re improving the breed,” says Lonny Taylor.
