It was the early spring, and Hegarty and three business partners were preparing to open High Wire Hydroponics in Raymond with dreams of exotic plants growing under a warm, artificial glow.

They priced out the display pond of their dreams. Even with friendly pricing for stonework and some donated labor, a 5-by-5-foot pond – plus the hydroponic gear to run it – could have cost the upstart operation $3,000 for custom masonry and a pond lining. “It was going to be a rather expensive endeavor, potentially,” Hegarty said. “We had visions of grandeur, for sure.” Salvaged from a home renovation project in Portland, the heavy, claw-footed example was a comparative steal at $200, Hegarty said. A few coats of paint later, the large vessel was ready for its in-store debut. “I don’t remember when or why, but we thought a claw-foot bathtub would be pretty cool,” he said. After positioning the piece in his Murray Drive showroom, he found the compact size of the tub was a more appropriate fit for his space, Hegarty said. Such displays are standard in the hydroponics business, which teach people how to grow plants without soil in nutrient-rich environments.

The demonstration units often contain exotic plant varieties. Hegarty, however, wanted a simpler approach, using his tub-based system to grow edible examples of his products. Herbs such as basil and vegetables such as string beans so far have flourished, he said. Some products even took off too fast for the compact tub system to handle.
Lab Puppies For Sale Grand Rapids Tomatoes, for instance, grew out of control, while microgreens such as lettuce are a mainstay.

Second Hand Furniture Selby Area “We wanted it to be unique, and we wanted it to be a working hydroponic system to show people at the store how simple it can be,” he said.

With lights and plants included, the whole system cost him about $500, which he called “substantial savings” over the pricier pond model, he said. “Two-thirds of the people who come in have something to say about it,” he said. A few have even asked for near-identical systems for their homes. The lower cost left Hegarty with more cash to stock his shelves for the company’s May 1 opening. Since then, sales have grown every month, even during the summer, which is typically slow for hydroponic suppliers. “Pretty much every bit of profit has been turned right back to inventory,” Hegarty said. His tub is only one example of product displays that utilize reused materials. Seed racks and product shelving were constructed from salvaged wooden shipping pallets that have been given a singed, rustic finish. The backbone of his business relies on the burgeoning ranks of medical marijuana growers who require specialized mixes of nutrients that he stocks, Hegarty said.

But he wants to begin targeting traditional gardeners who want to experiment with hydroponics during the winter, or as a way to jumpstart their flower and vegetable patches before snowbanks ebb every spring. The grow shop is Hegarty’s second business endeavor. The first – Wheely Good Bike Rentals, a bike-rental business with 20 bikes – was a side gig, but it gave him a taste of what entrepreneurship was like. Hegarty distributed the bikes, helmets and locks to his customers from the back of a truck. Instead of having customers return the rides when they were finished to a conventional bricks-and-mortar shop, Hegarty would set an agreed-upon place to lock up the bikes, which he would fetch at his convenience. It was a grind, he said. “I did it for three years, bartending at the same time,” Hegarty said. “It was a good understanding of the time and energy it took” to run a business. With plans to expand and refocus his marketing strategy next spring, Hegarty said he is ready to continue to grow – just like the lemon basil in his claw-foot bathtub.

The Ultimate Weekend Getaway in Maine This third-floor guest room with queen-sized bed offers a respite from the hustle and bustle with its calming colors of periwinkle blue, cream and maize. Sip tea in the soft easy chair in front of the working fireplace tucked under the eaves and enjoy the silence or enjoy a movie on the flat screen television. The attached private bath features an antique claw foot tub with shower for your comfort and pleasure. This room was originally the Nanny’s room and a small Plexiglass plate on the floor exposes the original lead lined trough that was once part of the water collection system for the manor house. The room is fully air-conditioned. Luxury awaits in our Rockland / Camden Maine accommodations. on September 27, 2015 From the moment you arrive, you feel welcome and comfortable. The location is ideal, near Bar Harbor island and a short walk to downtown. We loved the history of the inn, just wish we had chosen a larger room. We could barely open up our suitcase in the Sedgwick room, and there was barely any bathroom counter space.

However, loved the jacuzzi tub. on June 03, 2015 Rooms were very clean and comfortable. I would recommend having a room with a view of the bay but all rooms are great. Saltair is located on the bay just two blocks from downtown but in an area that is very quiet and relaxing. It is just a 10 minute drive to Arcadia National Park. A relaxing time is to sit on the chairs located at the end of the yard and watch the bay. The breakfast was excellent and more than enough to keep you going till dinner. The owners, Kristie and Matt, treat you more like family than guest. They were very helpful in telling us what to do and where to eat like a local. Wonderful bed and breakfast on October 13, 2014 I have stayed in a lot of inns over time, I have always enjoyed my stay, but this one takes the cake. Matt and Kristi were the most wonderful hosts, by offering friendly advice we were able to make the most of our two night stay. They add in little extras that make your stay extra special.

The house is BEAUTIFUL and wonderfully kept. We stayed in the cottage room and it was perfect for a couple. The room is so charming and welcoming in person, the pictures don't do it justice. The inn was clean, very comfortable, quiet, warm, and tastefully decorated. It's with-in walking distance to town, and bar island for some unique hiking. I loved the views, the backyard and view at breakfast was incredible. I can't wait to plan another trip and stay again. on August 29, 2012 Kristi and Matt were wonderful host. they gave us very good info on eatting and navigating around the area. would love to visit again! Fantastic room with incredible views on May 28, 2011 What a perfect retreat the master suite is! We absolutely loved our stay at the Saltair Inn. The room is huge! Perfect for the 4 days, 3 nights we spent. Even though it rained during a portion of our visit, it didn't matter. The sitting room is just what one needs to relax and forget about one's worries.

Kristi and Matt were excellent hosts. The breakfasts were delicious and they made sure we were well acquainted with the highlights/things to do. Matt provided us with maps and must-do hikes that are often overlooked. He was right, we had the trails to ourselves. They do an incredible job of making the vacation perfect. The restaurant scene is also a plus. Stick with Kristi and Matt's recommendations and you will not be disappointed. We can't wait to come back. Thanks for such a fantastic stay! on November 16, 2010 We stayed during the "in between" season when many stores had "closed for the season" and the weather was wet and cold, but we had a great time at this B&B. Kristi and Matt were great hosts and helped us plan our time in Bar Harbor. Loved it, loved it, didn't want to leave! on January 20, 2010 My husband and I stayed at the Saltair Inn for five days in July 2009 and were so exceptionally pleased. We stayed in the suite on the first floor and it was amazing.

Between the beautiful resting area overlooking the water, to the very comfortable bed, to the amazing hot tub, we were in heaven. The inn keepers went out of their way to accomodate my dietary requests, from the breakfast to the afternoon snacks. ( I am gluten free ) And my husband who can eat everything loved it too. Acadia is so beautiful and it was so lovely to come "home" to such a beautiful and wonderful place. Oh, and fireplace too! We will be back! Best place to stay in Bar Harbor on November 08, 2009 On our recent trip through the Northeast we stayed at four B&B's, we were happy with all of them but the Saltair was by far our favorite. Matt & Kristi are wonderful hosts and had excellant suggestions on what to do during our visit. Their property is absolutely beautiful. We expected the scenery but not the wonderful fireplace in our very large room, the really comfy beds and the yummy cookies each afternoon. The breakfasts were very nice and we really enjoyed the "family" atmospere.

This is the most we have paid for a B&B, but if you are willing to pay more for an amazing expereince the Saltair is the place. Warm cookies waiting, even warmer hospitality! on May 21, 2008 We just returned from a fabulous weekend at the Saltair Inn. We went to Bar Harbor to celebrate our anniversary and we couldn't have selected better accomodations! We arrived to the heavenly scent of freshly baked chocolate chip cookies. We were immediately offered cookies and fresh blueberry pie upon our arrival. We agreed instantly that we would abandon our diets for the weekend! Breakfast each morning was plentiful and delicious. We enjoyed meeting the other guests at breakfast. Everyone was friendly and seemed to be having a great time. The inn (a large Victorian house) has lots of character and is decorated beautifully. The amenities are great! There are lots of little extra touches that really made the difference (e.g. DVD and CD library, guide books, snack basket, hot and cold beverage selection, etc.).

Our room was very comfortable and clean. We had a gas fireplace which made for a cozy time. We experienced an afternoon of chilly, rainy weather so the fireplace and the DVD player were appreciated! Our hosts (Kristi, Matt and family) could not have done more to make us feel welcome. Whether we were looking for dinner ideas, information on Acadia or suggestions for local activities, they were full of great recommendations. They really went out of their way to make us feel at home. We thoroughly enjoyed meeting their family and can't wait for a return visit! on May 19, 2008 My husband and I just spent 6 nights at the Saltair Inn. It was absolutely perfect. The Innkeepers were the nicest we have ever experienced, and we travel a lot. The took so much time out of their busy day to make sure they helped us plan our day as far as hiking reccommendations, restaurant reccommendations, driving reccommendations, the list could go on and on. The breakfasts were delicious. We stayed in the Master Suite, which was very spacious and lovely.
