If you are interested in more information about this breed contact the SPDR Breed Rep here. Pembrokes are a small compact dog with a double coat. They are in the herding group and love to be active. It is commonly believed because of the name Welsh that they originated in Wales, but their ancestors could have possibly come from Egypt. There are two distinct types of Corgi – The Pembroke (no tail) and the Cardigan (with tail) They are very different dogs and not to be confused as the same breed.
One of the first corgis came to America in 1934 with Mrs Lewis Roesler. A corgi was created to work all day and be able to fit into a small place in the house at night to guard their people. Females: Preferred height at the withers is 10-12 inches, and roughly 23-25 pounds. Males: Preferred height at the withers is 12-13 inches, and roughly 30 pounds. Pembrokes come in Red and White (most common) tricolor (predominately black with white and red ) and Sable. Dogs with too much white are usually eliminated from our breeding programs. Also dogs that are too large or too small. Can be very high level energy to couch potatoes. 10 to 15 years. Can be good with children, but tend to herd them and can be heel nippers. Like to herd other animals and can be dog aggressive. Are very good at agility, herding and obedience. They shed a lot. Corgis have a double coat and will shed quite a bit if not brushed at least weekly. Health issues with corgis are Hip Dysplasia, and eye problems.
They are also prone to Degenerative Mylopthia and skin issues. Moderate to high level activities. Indoor or couch potato families unless they are an older dog. Very affectionate and loveable. Shed and can be dog aggressive. The site has info on breeders, events, rescues, etc. I know some Corgi folks across the US who have been active in the breed for decades. PM me if you have questions, and I'll ask them if they're willing to help you locate a GOOD breeder with good lines. Originally Posted by Patron of Wrath I agree with statements 1 and 2. Perhaps you might consider adopting one of the 1,500+ corgis on Petfinder at this time. I know that many are mixes but you might find a pb available. Or check with Corgi rescue Pembroke Corgi Rescue - Home if you are just looking for a pet and not a show dog. 9,149 posts, read 9,743,088 times Hm, the most difficult thing to me after having to get dressed at 2am to take him out to do his business was not knowing enough Asian languages to properly respond to the onslaught of young Asian women that would run up out nowhere to be like "ZOMGOMFGBFFWTFWELSHCORGI!!!!!1!!!" everywhere I went. And yes, I did capitalize on this. Ours was a 9-year old purebred who was a rescue; his mom of 9 years had died of cancer, and her daughter was going to have him put to sleep but the people at the shelter pointed her in the way of a corgi rescue in Eastern WA and that's how we got him. My ex roommate/one of my best friends and I both pitched in for him but when I moved back, she took him because I wouldn't have space in SF.
I miss my little lowrider dog... I'd encourage you to look into a rescue first, as most people would... there's someone on Seattle Craigslist right now who has a 4-year old male whose owner passed away *nudge nudge* In the meantime, you can contact these folks Pets 4 You - Amsburg Pembroke Welsh Corgi Website - Outstanding physical attributes and excellent temperaments. Have you had a corgi before? I grew up around dogs, and had been around cocker spaniels, springer spaniels, pugs, and pitbull mutts, plus exes who had little terriers and whatnot. The corgi was certainly the smartest of them all, and he also was the best guard dog. Even though he was older, he was a lot of fun to take out on walks... he could trot on those ridiculous little stub-legs forever. Running is always funny, because they throw their legs out like superman (see video below), and when they go up stairs, they tend to use their hind legs together like a pogo stick. They tend to like to jump over small obstacles, too, which is pretty amusing.
