Demand for dogs, and cats far exceeds the number of dogs, and cats in shelters. There is absolutely NO EXCUSE for a ‘shelter’ facility to be a KILL facility – not for volume intake reasons, community wealth, or lack of wealth is also NOT a presiding factor… Brockville Humane Society of Canada – Brockville Ontario Gananoque & District Humane Society – Gananoque, Ontario Ottawa Humane Society (OHS) – Ottawa, Ontario A VERY well-funded facility that CAN afford to go no-kill, but chooses not to. Renfrew County Branch – Ontario SPCA – Pembroke, Ontario SPCA Outaouais – Gatineau, 132 rue De Varennes, Gatineau Quebec It is unethical, and 100% unnecessary for the SPCA Outaouais to use a GAS CHAMBER to KILL dogs and cats – yet the SPCA Outaouais continue to CHOOSE to do so. There is NO EXCUSE other than human hubris for doing so. When you adopt a dog from the SPCA Outaouais facility – you save a dog from a CRUEL and TORTUROUS death by Gas Chamber. 

It is past time that Canadians take action to Ban the Use of Gas Chambers in Canada! The ability to go NO-KILL is NOT predicated on the WEALTH of the community/shelter, it is predicated on the WILL to do the right thing amongst those in the community, and those that run a shelter. As Nathan Winograd is aptly noted – Chippewa County, for example, is located on the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. It isn’t a wealthy community: the average per capita income is only $19,334. And it is cold. It gets an average of 99 inches of snow every year. In January, the average temperature is six degrees. But what it lacks in big dollars and warmth is something worth much more: big hearts and a burning desire to save lives. There was a time when as many as eight out of 10 animals were killed . After hiring a new director, everything changed.

Today, the shelter saves 97% of the animals. The per-capita income in Ottawa-Gatineau (the Nation’s Capital) is +80,000 dollars in 2013, which has since increased to +90,000 dollars.  You can see per capita income statistics up to 2013  here >>. FACT – there is no excuse for KILL facilities for dogs and cats in the National Capital’s region – nor in the rest of Canada and the U.S.A. Egos, hypocrisy, and human hubris aside. When you adopt a dog from a shelter you ensure that you are not supporting puppy mills and back-yard breeders. My own dog  pack is comprised of eleven dogs – eight  are rescued dogs (photo above is of some of the dogs in my own pack). I support rescued dogs and you can too! The vast majority of dogs that end up in shelters are beautiful, adoptable dogs. The next time you want to bring a new dog into your life – please think about adopting a dog from a local shelter or rescue group. Did you know that just as many pure bred dogs end up in shelters as do mixed-breed dogs? It is my firm belief and it has been my life experience in living and working with dogs that a dog is not a dog… There have been many well known, well respected people throughout history who have said that humans who endured in the face of great adversity carry many scars but it is these same people who have the most to contribute to society. I believe that the same can be said for the dog.
