For starters, when was the last time anyone lubricated the lock? With UPVC Locks it is important not only to lubricate the cylinder, (where you put your key into) but also down the leading edge where all the bolts shoot out into the frame. Normally a little 3 in 1 oil should be more than ample. Lift the handle up and down at the same time, while putting a little oil in. Normally that is all you'd need to do, and without stripping the lock out of the door that is as much as one can expect to do.  

If you feel it freeing up as the oil works its way in then that's great news. Now you need to close the door and lift the handle, this should also be smooth Perhaps a little resistance as the door compresses against the seals. But that should be all; if it is stiff to lift then eventually the lock is going to break. The reason for this is simple, the door is not in line with the frame. What the UPVC door manufactures do tell you about UPVC doors is, they expand and contract a lot more than steel or wooden doors, and what you may find in the peak of the summer or winter is the lock is stiffer to use. This is because as the door expand and contracts the lock and keeps are bordering on there limits. Also what people find is that after lifting the handle up, you have to push it up with one hand whilst trying to turn the key and then you have to push up again to get the key to turn over. This is very common with UPVC locks and found this to be the fault with many call outs when I was on the tools.

The problem again is mis alignment, if you tried to go through the motions when the door is open and the key rotates fine, then it is certain that the lock is not engaging its keeps correctly. This could either be because of what I have mentioned above or perhaps the hinges are worn and the door is starting to drop, either way, attention is needed, because if it is not fixed, one day you will lift that little harder and the follower (spindle slot for handle) will break and thats it, a locked door that cant be opened.
