Update on my girl this morning... Miraculously, no broken bones. That in itself is beyond belief considering the mess that was made of her leg. She has, however, sheared off a main tendon that holds her hock together. The surgeons want to grind away her cartilage in that hock and fuse all the little bones in that joint. All of this as a result of a cruisy little drive to town with the 2 youngsters on the back. Yes they love it. So here I am thinking I'm doing the SAFE thing by using horse ropes with special instant release knots to hold them. Good strong clips on those ropes to hold their body weight, not just lightweight dog leads. Not too long so they won't hit the ground should anything go wrong.... And a full body harness with padded chest straps for security rather than just clipping them by the collar. So much for that. The buckles on the harness straps shattered. Reba hit the ground back legs first, then when the second buckle broke suffered her head trauma. Made a complete mangled mess of her back left leg, and tore out all of her nails from her back right foot. The impact of her head trauma caused bruising inside her left ear and scleral haemorraghing ie her eyes were full of blood. My lesson from this, which sadly my beautiful girl is paying for, is that THERE IS NO SAFE WAY FOR A DOG TO TRAVEL IN A UTE unless you have a good strong cage.
