Dogs Related to the Belgian Malinois Interested in the history of the Belgian Malinois dog breed? The Belgian sheep-herding breeds, collectively known as chiens de berger Belge, shared their early history as general-purpose shepherds and guard dogs of Belgium. As working dogs, they were bred for ability rather than esthetics, and no careful records were kept. Thus, when dog shows became popular in the late 1800s, it was not clear if Belgium had any recognizable breeds with which they could tout their national pride.

The shorthaired variety was developed in the area around Malines, and so became known as the Belgian Malinois. The Malinois remains the most popular of the Belgian shepherd breeds in his native land, but has had a rockier road in America. Between 1911 and World War II, the Malinois enjoyed a good deal of popularity in America. After the war, registrations plummeted, and it was rare to find a Malinois entered in competition. When the breeds were separated in 1959, Malinois registrations began to grow once again, but they still fell far behind the other Belgian breeds. More recently, the Malinois is becoming popular because of his reputation as one of the pre-eminent police dogs in the world, surpassing even the German Shepherd in demand. Thus, even though the Malinois may not be seen in many homes or show rings, this breed is making its presence known as a keeper of the peace throughout the world. Owner/breeder/handler Kent Boyles, with Rumor, a German Shepherd, at the 2016 Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show on Monday, February 15, 2016. (James Keivom/New York Daily News) A German Shepherd named Rumor is the talk of Westminster Kennel Club Show. The four-year-old beauty won “Best in Breed” Monday afternoon - making her a frontrunner in the herding dog category. The purebred pooch will fight tooth-and-nail for “Best in Show” - the crown of all canine competitions - Tuesday evening at Madison Square Garden. As dozens gathered around Rumor post-win, her owner and handler Kent Boyles lauded the black-and-brown pup’s personality. She's a super nice representative of German Shepherds,” said Boyles, an Edgerton, Wisconsin resident. “Structurally, she's near perfect, very close to the standard.” The four-year-old beauty won “Best in Breed” Monday afternoon. Despite Rumor’s victory and 101 non-Westminster “Best in Show” titles under her collar, she has a rough road ahead of her.

Some 3,000 canines from 199 eligible breeds and varieties are competing at Westminster on Monday and Tuesday. The show, now in its 140th year, features dogs from 50 states, Washington, D.C., and Puerto Rico, as well as at least 12 foreign countries. Rumor must compete against other dogs in the herding group for a crack at “Best in Show.” If Rumor wins in the herding group, she can then compete against other breeds from other groups for “Best in Show.” There are seven groups, so a total of seven dogs will compete for the final “Best in Show” contest. Sage, a 1-year-old Shih Tzu, and her handler, 37-year-old Mandy Carlson, prepped for Sage's first Westminster competition. As Rumor wrapped up for the day, Sage, a 1-year-old Shih Tzu, prepped for her first Westminster competition. Sage’s handler, 37-year-old Mandy Carlson, brushed the lapdog, explaining that it takes some three hours to comb and flat iron the pup's gray-and-white coat. "She loves it, they're bred to be the type of pets that sit in your lap and be pampered," the Savage, Minn. resident said.

Zack, a 5-year-old bearded collie -- the breed made famous in “Peter Pan” -- was one of the many unlucky pups that didn’t advance. Visitors greet Zack, a bearded collie, at the 2016 Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show on February 15, 2016. “It's disappointing, you always want to win,” said Lexie Ditlow, one of Zack's groomers and assistant handlers. Ditlow, of Camp Hill, Penn., was nevertheless hopeful. "There's always another dog show,” the 25-year-old said. Miss P, a 4-year-old beagle from British Columbia, Canada, won Westminster’s 2015 “Best in Show” contest. The plucky pooch was a descendant of 2008 “Best in Show” winner Uno - the only other beagle to take this title. Send a Letter to the EditorWelcome to Von Waldberg German Shepherds!
