Rumor won the best in Herding group. NEW YORK — A dog with Lucas County ties took home two titles Monday and will compete for Best in Show at the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show in New York City. A 4-year-old female German shepherd dog co-bred and co-owned by Pamela McElheney of Lockenhaus German Shepherds in Springfield Township won Best of Breed. Lockenhaus’ Rumor Has It V. Kenlyn, called Rumor for short, then won Best of Group in the evening, meaning a spot in the final competition today. “It’s very exciting,” Ms. McElheney said.

Rumor rose over 10 others of her breed in the conformation ring, where each dog is judged on how closely it represents the ideal standards of the breed. She then bested 29 others in the herder group. The dog also won Best of Breed in 2015 at Westminster, and placed fourth in the herding group that year. Ms. McElheney said Rumor faced stiff competition from the other German shepherds, but her personality sets her apart. “What makes her really outstanding is her attitude,” she said. Rumor and her co-breeder, co-owner, and handler Kent Boyles of Wisconsin will appear on the CBS This Morning show today. Also competing Monday was West Toledoan Lynn Lippincott, who participated in the first-ever Masters Obedience Championship at Westminster. He said his 8-year-old golden retriever, Tanbark’s Little Miss Sunshine, or Reba, did well, but the pair did not make it into the final 10. Reba missed a command. She had been trotting toward Mr. Lippincott from across the ring and quickly dropped to the floor on command.

The crowd laughed and clapped as she slid to a halt, but she missed Mr. Lippincott’s next command, and he had to repeat it. “It was a pretty drop,” he said. “Everybody was clapping, and she just didn’t hear me.” He had hoped to be in the Top 10 of the 35 teams competing, but he is pleased with having made it to Westminster. “I’m just happy to be here,” he said. Breed competition starts again today at 8 a.m., with the sporting, working, and terrier groups aired live tonight starting at 8 p.m. on USA Network. The final Best in Show ring will follow tonight’s groups. Three other dogs with area ties competing today are: ● English springer spaniel Telltale Crossroad Opposites Attract, or Blizzard, owned by Laurie and Dick Green of Toledo. ● German wirehaired pointer Harvest Meadow’s Money to Burn, or Cash, owned by Mary Jo and Jerry Bish of Pemberville, bred by Lisa Minnick of Harvest Meadow Kennels in Delta. ● Leonberger Yoks Vom Kaniberg, or Barnabus, co-owned and handled by Monroe native Amanda Austin of Louisville.
