A frequent question I have been receiving is, “When should I start training my bird dog.” My recommendations is this. It starts as soon as your puppy arrives at your home. Your dog needs to know basic obedience and how to be respectful to the people and surrounding it comes in contact with. I would recommend teaching them the basic commands of  “Come, Whoa, and No.” I would also recommend that you teach your dog to “Whoa” rather than sit to avoid your bird dog sitting whenever their is pressure on the leash.

But most importantly, let your puppy have fun and explore as much as possible. They are just like that wild 2-year-old who wants to see whats around the corner. As far as formal training, I would start them in our Puppy Program between 4-6 months of age.Too often people wait too long and then they have a really great house dog that lacks a desire to be out in the field (Think of  it as sending your 16-year-old out to his first job without ever having him do a single job or chore at home…it could be a rough first day of work).Our goal during this month, is to train your puppy to be fearless. We will introduce them to birds,guns, and basic commands. We want them to be excited to be in the field finding birds and happy about the job they are doing. At 9-12 months of age we have your puppy come back for our 60-day formal training program. Our goal is this, if you give us a few months, I will give you a dog that has reached his full potential and who will give you the best hunts of its lifetime.
