After state certification of occupancy, it will then be open to other patients, including those with Medicare and Medicaid.“What’s the cool thing about it is the continuum of care. In this area, in Genesee County, we needed something,” said Executive Director Ryan Michelson. “It takes health care and turns it on its ear. Michelson said usually a facility might be only assisted living, rehab or 24-hour care separately.
It’s unique to have them all under one roof. The goal is to get as many people as possible back living at home, but the facility is beneficial to those patients who may have to go from assisted living to the health center, which is the 24-hour care, if their health declines, said Elaine Campbell, market development coordinator. Instead of being moved around to different locations, clients can just stay at the same campus.A ribbon cutting for the facility will take place from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Sept. 27 and an open house will take place from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Sept. 30. There are 51 rooms in the health center, 26 in assisted living and 12 in memory care, which helps individuals with Alzheimer’s and dementia. Three rooms in the health center have shock-absorbent floors for individuals who are prone to falling. There are also five companion suites in long-term care.So far, about 22 employees have been hired. A second wave of hiring will take place once the facility begins taking in more patients.
In the end, the senior living facility will employ about 100 to 120 employees ranging from registered nurses, physical therapists, nursing assistants, dietary staff, speech therapists, housekeeping staff, maintenance workers, activities coordinators and chefs, among other positions.Robin St. Onge of Goodrich recently toured the facility with thoughts of bringing her 93-year-old mother there. From first impression, she liked what she saw, she said. “It’s gorgeous, wonderful, homey,” St. Onge said. “I’d like to give it a try. I got a good feel. I like the nurse’s station. I like the way the halls are on monitors on the computer.”When designing Oaks at Woodfield, staff wanted to make sure it had a home-like atmosphere.“We have a lot of common areas,” Campbell said. “We want to take away that institution feel.”It offers a relaxed feeling when families come and visit and also has many options for activities. There is an outdoor patio area with a grill for families to cook dinner, along with a putting green.
The facility will also include game rooms and TVs set up with Wii’s. The dining rooms have tables set with white table cloths and nice dishes, with chefs on hand to make three meals a day.“We wanted to bring a resort feel to a health care facility,” Michelson said. Michelson also wants to make sure that residents know their lives don’t have to drastically change because they move to Oaks at Woodfield. There is a bus available to take residents to different locations, such as church groups or restaurants.Michelson, who lives in Grand Blanc Township and was a 1991 graduate of Grand Blanc High School, hopes to add something to the community he lives in.“Anything can be beautiful coming in, but it’s the care given that makes a difference,” he said. “Being from the Grand Blanc area, I wanted to put a stake in it. There is definitely a need.”But most of all, Michelson said he can’t wait to meet the future residents of the facility and spend time with them. “I can’t wait to hang out and play chess with somebody,” he said with a smile.
