It's protected beautiful waters is what makes it unique. Its total privacy is what makes it special. The central theme of Bird Island is a self-catering Robinson Crusoe adventure with all the comforts; where one could get to do their own thing in total privacy. Our philosophy is that we offer Bird Island not only as a unique experience, in a fabulous location, yet offered at an ~exceptional~ price, so is indeed affordable for most people.
The island is made to order for the self-sufficient and resourceful in nature; in turn, nothing is an inconvenience for us to make your stay a great success. Minimum stay is 3 days.One of the best snorkeling and fishing areas in Belize. 2. A well stocked kitchen/pantry. All one has to bring is basic staples such as favorite meats, vegetables and drinks.3. Transportation from to and from island from Placencia! 4. Light-spinning fishing equipment is on the island. Snorkeling equipment (and or tanks) is best to bring your own or rent locally on the way to the island, thought there are many sets in the island.5. Kayaks (2) and paddle boat (1). 6. Local phone and WiFi. TV/CD player and an excellent movie collection.7. Barbecue and fire pit, sundeck and many other such amenities. The island has a new main house at one end and a separate cabana on the other. It is surrounded by extremely shallow crystal-clear waters; you can snorkel, swim, wade or take the kayaks or paddle boat right from the island and cruise the entire nearly mile-long atoll or nearby islands.
It is a perfect setting for either a romantic get-away for a couple, a family reunion or a group of friends. The island also has exceptional weather, always cool when mainland starts to become hot and humid by early April. Another excellent aspect of Bird Island is that you will rarely see any of the notorious sand flies or mosquitoes so common in the mainland; it was hand-filled with fine river sand to achieve that objective. Want to get-away from it all, even for the shortest of time, with your love one or some friends, then this is the place. Want to go swimming or snorkeling in crystal clear water in a beautiful unspoiled reef, you will be surrounded by one. Want to grab a fishing rod and cast to cruising feeding fish, the atoll around the island is considered one of the best for it. Spending time at Bird Island, even for the shortest of time, you will feel like you have done something special. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Please note: Bird Island is always undergoing improvements each year;
we close every June 15th-July 15th to make such changes. This year (2016) we added new decks, a fishing dock and a new watchtower. In June 2017, we will be adding a beautiful cabana over the water and connected to the island via a walkway. This will bring the capacity of Bird Island to at least 6 people (4 separate sleeping areas) and even to 8 people, depending on combination.You will have the whole island to yourselves.There are no other guests.There are other nearby islands for exploring.We have a 2-person pedal boat and kayaks for exploring other islands and entire atoll. Snorkeling is done right from the island.General Bird Island Information Bird Island is not only a unique experience (imagine having a truly private island all to your self in today’s world), but it is offered at an ~exceptional~ price, so is indeed affordable for most people. The island is best suited for the self-sufficient at heart and resourceful in nature who will appreciate the opportunity of being truly detached from civilization at least for a few days.-------------------------------Getting to Bird Island (from Belize City to Placencia):By Air: (Maya or Tropic Air) $235 USD round trip per person / 40 minute flight.
Fastest way,By Car: Rental Car; roughly 3.5 hour drive. Cost could range between $44 - $125 USD a day.By Taxi: runs about $150 USD each way, up to 4 people.By Shuttle: they start at roughly $30 USD each way per person; 5 runs a day. Nice relaxing scenic drive.------------------------------------General weather pattern:January-June is considered the 'dry season'; June 15th-July 15th the first rains occur (island is closed); July 15-September 15th usually great weather; September 15th-October 1st is the 2nd rainy stretch (island closed); October 1st-December 30th scattered thunderstorms here and there but great weather in between them. #1- The trip from Placencia Village to Bird Island is included in the booking price. Generally speaking, the default check-out time is at 11:00, and pick up at the dock is at 1:00pm. We meet at the M&M Hardware BOAT DOCK/gas station, which is way in the back of its large parking lot (lagoon side). When you book the island, you (or group) will have the whole Island all to yourselves.
#3- Sun Tan Lotion and Bug Spray. Remember, it is the tropics; the best type is one of high Block Factor, either lotion or spray type. As to bugs (sandflies), Bird Island just doesn't tend to have them, but on extremely-calm, still days they may come from other nearby islands so bring bug spray just in case; besides good to have when visiting the mainland. #4- Wading slipper-type shoes. The island is surrounded by hard sand flats, further away coral; bringing soft shoes that cover your toes are a good thing to have when exploring about. There are many pairs in the island that may fit. #5- Snorkeling equipment: Bring your own or you can rent them locally on the way to the island. For divers, there is a place for renting tanks also. #6- Fishing equipment: The island is usually surrounded by constant marauding schools of fish (jacks, snappers, etc) feeding around it. The island does have two light-spinning sets. Best to bring a few small (1") silver spoons if fishing. #7- Food: Bird Island is a self-catering scenario so plan to bring enough meats, vegetable, drinks (and liquor) for your stay.
The island however, does have a very well-stocked kitchen with a myriad of condiments such as cake mixes, flour, rice, spices, oils, paper towels, garbage bags, etc. Quite near where we take off for the island, there are food stores and vegetable stands. Food shopping is a very simple step in Placencia Village, should be left for last. #8- Water: The island has a well-filtered rain-water system, for all uses including cooking and even drinking water. Nonetheless, we still provide purified water for drinking; meaning no need to worry about drinking water. A local phone will be left with you at the island so you can call local numbers, or us, at any time. The island has very good and reliable WiFi so bring your iPhone or laptop for the Internet. The island is solar-powered 24/7. No need for a noisy generator, though one is on island just in case. The island has two single-person ecellent kayaks and paddle boat to cruise the atoll that surrounds it. #12- Sleeping accommodations: The main house has a master bedroom with a double bed and a double sofa/bed.
It also has a separate, small back bedroom. It has a separate Cabana, with a double-size bed, Sirius radio, desk and chair. The island can accommodate four (4) persons perfectly, more depending on group composition. #13- Length of stay: We have a policy of a minimum stay of 3 days because just about every guest's opinion has been that the island merits a stay of at least 3 days. Most people stay in Bird Island 3-5 days and come to Placencia for a week or 10 days. In this way, they get to experience the island and Placencia; where there are many excellent tours out of and we can send you a list of them upon request. As to boat trips to the mainland (Placencia Village) during your stay, that is certainly an option, since getting supplies, or just visiting the village is either a must to get more supplies or just something fun to do; this usually comes up with people staying 5 days and offered as a good-will gesture. As to places to stay on the mainland, right on the beach, may we suggest Sea Spray Hotel, Cozy Corner and/or Nirvana Hotel.
