Former Ormet Aluminum Smelter Facility ready for restart and begin producing aluminum again 43840 Ohio 7, Hannibal, OH 43931 The former Ormet Aluminum Smelter was commissioned in 1958. The Hannibal, Ohio facility is located on approximately 1,600 acres with terminal facilities along the Ohio River. The smelter has six potlines consisting of 1,032 pots and a smelting capacity of 270 thousand tonnes of primary aluminum. Currently all of the facility’s operations are idled. The plant operated with positive EBIDTA even during the financial crisis from 2008 through 2011. This facility can readily be restarted and begin producing aluminum again in the near future. 

The plant is strategically located on the Ohio River with river, rail and highway access. Alumina raw material is vacuum unloaded from barges on the Ohio River. The facility’s six potlines operate independently. Following the recent shut down, Midwest aluminum price premiums to spiked record highs suggesting a need for the facility’s supply. The intermediate and long-term outlook for aluminum demands are positive.
