The town is comprised of 38.9 square miles of land and 0.5 square miles of water. It is drained by the Cold River and lies entirely within the Connecticut River watershed. To the east of Alstead is Lake Warren. Alstead was chartered in 1735 and incorporated in 1763. The town had joined Vermont in 1781, during the Revolutionary War, but returned to New Hampshire the following year. Alstead was the location of New Hampshire’s first paper, and is therefore also known as the Paper Mill Village. Alstead is home to the Alstead Historical Museum, Lake Warren, Pratt Rock and the Alstead Center. It is also home to major businesses including Benson Woodworking Company, Branchflower Lumber and Fuller Machine Company.

The town is home to the Shedd-Porter Memorial Library, which was builit in 1909-1910. The library was a gift to the towns of Alstead and Langdon by the native son, John G. Shedd, President of Chicago’s Marshall Field's department stores. Charles M. Vilas, another native son, donated a school building, a public recreation area, and Cheshire County’s only carillon. According to the 2010 U.S. Census Bureau, Alstead’s population at the time was 1,937 people. As of the census of 2000 there were 771 households, 534 families and 941 housing units.
