The city is located in the Famagusta Bay on the east coast and is today a gost city. The city was founded in 300 B.C. on the ruins of the settlement of Arsenoe (it was named after Arsenoe II of Egypt). The Greek name of the city is Ammochostos, meaning hidden in the sand. Famagusta’s major landmarks are the Venetian walls and the archaeological sites of Ancient Salamis and Ancient Engomi. The Natural Park of Cavo Greco is an incredible area of natural beauty which one should not miss.

The park is located in the southern part of the Famagusta District that has not been occupied by the Turkish forces in 1974. The area is known to the locals as the area of ‘Kokkinochoria’ (red villages) due to the red colour of the earth in the area; the trade mark of the area is hundreds of windmills.
