Travel Tips A small natural lake in northern New Jersey, Swartswood Lake is open to public fishing and offers a variety of opportunities for freshwater anglers. In addition to its natural game fish population, Swartswood Lake is stocked annually by the New Jersey Department of Fish and Wildlife. The lake is recognized as one of New Jersey's finest walleye fisheries. Swartswood Lake and State Park Swartswood Lake covers 550 acres in New Jersey's Kittatinny Mountains. A few houses and cabins dot the shoreline, but Swartswood's waterfront is largely undeveloped, making it an ideal destination for fishermen who like to get away from it all. Originally formed by glaciers, today the lake is located within Swartswood State Park, New Jerseys oldest state park. The park offers fishing and boating access, including boat rentals. Camping, swimming, hiking and hunting also are available. Fish Species Walleye have been stocked in Swartswood Lake since 1992, and the lake supports walleye that weigh more than 6 pounds and are up to 24 inches long.

The New Jersey Division of Fish and Wildlife also stocks the lake with brook, brown and rainbow trout every spring. Naturally occurring populations of bass, sunfish, catfish, pike and pickerel provide year-round action for fishermen, as well. Tips and Tactics Spring offers the best walleye fishing in Swartswood lake, as these fish move into shallow water to spawn. Target walleye near bottom in rocky areas with live minnows, night crawlers or jigs tipped with curly-tail grubs. Bass and sunfish fishing is at its finest in early summer, when these fish can be found in shallow weedy areas near deeper water. The cooler months offer the best trout fishing. Swartswood Lake's smaller neighbor, known as Little Swartswood Lake, also offers the potential for productive fishing. Considerations You must have a New Jersey fishing license to fish at Swartswood Lake. Licenses are available at most bait shops and sporting goods stores across the state, as well as the Division of Fish and Wildlife website.

At the time of publication, an annual fishing license costs $22.50 for New Jersey residents, or $34.00 for nonresidents. Statewide limits, seasons and fishing regulations apply.
