As a tip we recommend that you always have two working keys for your Chevy Equinox, and here is why: Many people usually use the same key to drive their car. Over time, this key gets worn out or breaks. What is great about the Chevy Equinox is that you can program a key yourself, as long as you already have two working keys. You can program a third key yourself. This means that before one of the keys stops working, you can take care of it and make a new key yourself. This will also usually save you money. Does the key to my Chevy Equinox have a chip in it? The Chevy Equinox from the years 2005 and 2006 do not have a chip in the key, and these keys do not need to be programmed to your car. However, in these years you can have a keyless remote with push buttons to lock and unlock your doors. The Chevy Equinox that were made in the years 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016 and 2017. do have a chip inside the keys and these keys will need to be programmed to your car’s immobilizer.

In the years 2007 to 2009, you can also add a keyless remote to lock and unlock your doors. In the years 2010 to 2013, you can add a key fob remote. This key fob has push buttons to lock and unlock your doors located on the key head. Making a duplicate key to a Chevy Equinox yourself You must have two working keys In order to make a duplicate key for your Chevy, you need to buy a key blank. After you get your key blank, take the less used working key that you have for your Chevy Equinox and take it to your neighborhood hardware store, or even a local locksmith store and ask them to copy your working key to your new key blank. After you have it done, you are ready to program the new key yourself. Before you start, make sure you have your two old working keys and the new key that you have just gotten copied. Insert one of your old working keys into your ignition cylinder and turn it to the on position, but do not start the engine. Look on the dashboard where all the lights come on, such as the oil light, gas light, battery light, etc., and look for a light that either says theft, security, or shows a key. If this light is on, great! Do not do anything else until the light goes off by itself. After the light goes off, turn the ignition off and remove the key. Insert your second old working key and repeat the same steps that you did with the first key. After the theft light turns off again, turn the ignition off and pull the key out.

Then insert the new key you have just gotten copied and repeat the same steps once again. When the theft light goes off this time, it will mean you have just programmed your new key yourself. How to program a replacement Chevy Equinox key when you have no spare First, we would like to recommend that if you have lost your Chevy Equinox key and have no spare, the most convenient way to get a replacement key, is by using a mobile locksmith. A mobile locksmith will be able to come to your location and and cut and program you a new working key either by your Chevy Equinox VIN number or key code. This process should take no longer than half an hour after the locksmith arrives. If you still want to know how to program a new key yourself, this is how: Before you try programming a new key to your Chevy, make sure your Chevy Equinox requires a chip key. Most of the Chevy Equinox from 2007 and up, will require a transponder chip key. You will need to get your transponder key already cut to your Chevy.

You also have to be able to turn your ignition cylinder with this key. Insert your new key to the ignition cylinder and turn to the on position. Do not start the engine. After the key is on the on position, look on the dashboard and see that all the lights are on, such as the battery light, gas light, etc. Look for a light that either says theft, security, or just a key. When you see the theft light, do not touch anything, including the key. Leave the key in the on position and wait about 10 minutes until the theft light turns off by itself. After the light turns off, turn the ignition cylinder to the off position, and then turn it right back on to the on position. Again do not start the engine. Again, look for the theft light to be on and wait around 10 more minutes until the theft light turns off again. Repeat this step one more time, making it a total of 3 times doing this. When the theft light has turned off the third time, you have just programmed your new Chevy Equinox key.
