Police say they responded to a call about a sexual assault last Thursday in the North York area. In a statement, police said a 26-year-old woman travelled to an apartment near Yonge Street and Finch Avenue, where she agreed to purchase a cat from a man who had posted an ad on Kijiji. The man offered the woman some food and drinks, police said. “She started feeling unwell, so she was led to a bedroom where she was brought to lay down. She was sexually assaulted in that bedroom,” Const. David Hopkinson told CTV Toronto.
Ghenadie Carpov, 52, was arrested on Friday and charged with sexual assault and administering a noxious substance. He appeared in court the same day. Kijiji issued a statement in response. “We are saddened to hear about this disturbing case and will fully cooperate with the investigation, as needed. The safety and security of our users is paramount. We are committed to maintaining a safe online community for users,” said Shawn McIntyre, Community Relations and Communications Manager for Kijiji, in a written statement. Police offered advice for anyone purchasing items off Kijiji. They recommend buyers ask to meet in a public space, not go alone, take a photo of the seller and ask to see a seller’s ID. “We want to advise people to be very cautious when they’re going out to purchase things, especially on Kijiji ads,” Hopkinson said. Police are concerned that there may be other victims. Anyone with information is asked to contact police at 416-808-7474 or Crime Stopper anonymously at 416-222-TIPS.

Barbara Lapointe says by banning such sales, Kijiji Canada would be cutting off one of the last avenues available for the mills to sell their animals. Kijiji, for its part, says it has no intention of preventing pet sales, and a spokesman said the company has already partnered with animal protection groups to prevent puppy mills from using the site.
After Kijiji said it wouldn’t change its policy, the Post‘s Jake Edmiston spoke with Ms. Lapointe to discuss her next move. We still want to see pets on Kijiji. But they’ll be coming from shelters and individual families [for a small adoption fee]. Q: Kijiji Canada told the Canadian Press that it will not change its policy on household pets. Is there anything else you can do at this point?I’m sure we’ll get to a point where Kijiji and I can speak together. Q: Kijiji currently has thousands of classifieds for pets. There’s more than 9,000 ads in Ontario just for dogs and puppies. Could removing pet sales entirely be too tall an order? We’re not reaching too high. We started at the bottom and we’re at the point where if puppy mills can’t sell in pet stores, they’re going to resort to online sales. So, let’s tackle the online sales. Kijiji should be the example. Canada should be an example. Q: Well, Kijiji has an extensive code of conduct on pet sales, including a long list of tips on how to avoid puppy mills posing as individual families. You don’t think that’s enough?
A: They say they moderate their posts. But they rely on the public to flag the ads before staff review it. It shouldn’t be up to the public. Kijiji can say it encourages adoption, but by also allowing pet sales, it does not discourage puppy mills from selling online. Ghenadie Carpov, 52, was arrested and charged with sexual assault and administering a noxious substance after a woman responded Thursday to his Kijiji ad offering a cat for sale. Police say the woman went to a home in the Yonge and Finch area in the city’s north end to see the cat and after she agreed to buy it, Carpov offered her some refreshments.
