Once they start to eat solid kitten food, however, they need vaccinations from the veterinarian. Kittens should receive their first series of vaccinations when they're six weeks old. If you adopt a kitten from a shelter or buy one from a breeder, ask for the kitten's medical records. Your kitten will need to visit the veterinarian several times during its first year and once a year after it's a year old, unless there is a medical need. Your veterinarian will determine what vaccinations your kitten receives. He or she will consider such factors as your geographical location, whether your kitten is allowed outdoors, and whether it lives in a multi-cat household.

In addition to vaccinations, your kitten should be tested for feline leukemia (FeLV), a highly contagious, life-threatening virus. Don't expose your kitten to any other cats unless they've been tested for FeLV. The following is a sample veterinary schedule for a kitten's first year: First Visit (6 to 8 weeks) Fecal exam for parasites Blood test for feline leukemia Vaccinations for rhinotracheitis, calcivirus, panleukopenia and chlamydia Discuss nutrition and grooming Second Visit (12 weeks) Examination and external check for parasites Second vaccinations for rhinotracheitis, calcivirus, and panleukopenia Back to New Cat Care Guides petMD: Puppy & Kitten Names Adopt a Pet through PetSmart Charities2016 Walk for the Animals!Registration is now open! If you buy a cat food that contains grain, look for brown rice and other whole grains and avoid soy, corn or wheat. Both wet cat food and dry cat food can be nutritious options. Some people believe that crunchier foods help keep a cat's teeth clean, while others argue that wet foods help cats stay hydrated. Cat treats can also be tasty, nutritious additions to your kitty's diet. Some cats may require specially formulated food. Kitten food often has more protein and calories than regular cat food, to help kittens with their rapid growth. Overweight cats, underweight cats, very old cats and indoor cats may also have special nutritional needs. You can always ask your vet about special dietary requirements that your cat may have.
