I have been a great family companion and they have trained me well. They taught me to sit and stay. They took me on fun hikes and took me swimming. They treated me like family, and kept me inside the house. I am housebroken, crate trained, and I don't chew up anything. Yes, I'm pretty much a perfect puppy. You...’ll want a pup who is friendly, affectionate, obedient and patient. The proper training (for dog and kids alike) can make a big difference, too. Here are a few breeds that PetMD says are the best for kids—plus another favorite from us. And remember, don’t leave children and a new dog together unsupervised. Labrador Retrievers There’s a reason why so many Labs have jobs—as guide dogs, search-and-rescue dogs or even working for the TSA.

Labs are smart and eager to please their owners. But they’re great with families and are currently the most popular breed in the U.S. Training will help develop a rapport with your family. Choose from black, yellow or chocolate. Golden Retrievers Like Labs, Golden Retrievers are popular choices for families, thanks to the breed’s intelligent, affectionate temperament. These dogs were originally bred for retrieving game during hunts, which makes them naturally responsive to commands and easy to train. These pups also have boundless energy for playtime and snuggle and will happily play with children of all ages for hours. Newfoundlands Nana, the helpful canine in Peter Pan, was a Newfoundland. These giant, fuzzy dogs are mellow and patient with kids and highly prized for their protective natures. Due to their size, Newfoundlands do best in larger homes with plenty of space. They require regular grooming and cleanup as well, as they tend to shed and drool. Beagles If you’re looking for a livelier pet, consider the Beagle.
