Show FAQ Have a service related question? Cutting curved shapes on the backs of laminate boards can be confusing. Most laminate flooring boards have a surface coating of plastic that is vulnerable to chipping when you cut it. For this reason, it's a recommended practice to cut from the back of the board. This isn't always practical when making curved cuts with a jigsaw, because you have to reverse the cutting measurements, and it's easy to make mistakes. You can minimize the chipping when cutting face up by using a laminate-cutting blade in your saw. If you don't have one, you can employ another technique that is just as effective. Cover the part of the board you are going to cut with masking tape. Blue painter's tape is better than all-purpose tan tape because it's easier to remove.
Overlap the tape by about 1/4 inch, being sure not to leave bare spaces. Measure and draw the shape you need to cut on the tape with a tape measure and a pencil. Insert a laminate- or metal-cutting blade into the jig saw. Support both ends of the board rather than just letting one end hang over the edge of the workbench. This provides more stability and reduces the possibility of chipping. Cut slowly without forcing the blade while you hold the board securely so it doesn't vibrate. Pull off the tape immediately after finishing the cut. The longer you leave it, the more strongly it adheres.
