The club will participate in activities that will expand and explore historic ideals and will include trips to historic sites and of historic significance. Recently the History@Snead club at Snead State Community College took its first trip of 2016 and focused on local history and locations by a visit to Cathedral Caverns in Grant, Alabama. Originally called Bat Cave, Cathedral Caverns was opened to the public by Jacob Gurley in the 1950's. The cave was renamed because of its cathedral-like appearance.  Purchased by the state in 1987, it was opened as a State Park in the summer of 2000. The caverns have housed native Americans, Civil War miners, and those escaping conscription during the Civil War.

The students enjoyed a full tour of the caves and saw fossils, sharks teeth, an underground river, as well as bats! Afterward the students experienced an Asian inspired lunch. The in the next few months more interesting trips are planned to further the mission of the club that strives to reflect history in a variety of locations and ways for students of Snead State. The History@Snead club from Snead State Community College recently visited the U.S. Space and Rocket Center in Huntsville, Alabama. Second Hand Furniture Beaumont TxThey were able to experience futuristic technology such as lasers and holograms and had the opportunity to use mind power to move a ball along a path. The outdoor simulation rides featuring a rocket blast off and anti-gravity were also very popular among the students. There was also a display of 101 inventions that are tied to the state of Alabama. The center has an impressive display of a Saturn V rocket, how Huntsville was integral in its development, and how this innovation helped man to reach the moon. The club had lunch at BJ’s, a local eatery, and enjoyed fellowship over a good meal. The History@Snead club is formed to foster the love of history among Snead students and to travel to local areas of interest and expand  student’s knowledge of local history and the impact that it has on the world today. Recently the History@Snead club traveled to Sylacauga to tour the historic Desoto Caverns. The club received a private tour of the caverns and learned that not only did Hernando Desoto find and experience this cave but Native Americans did so as well. The club saw carvings from the 1700’s, a burial site of a Native American, and experienced a laser light show and an in-cave water fall.

They then had lunch at the Marble City Grill where they were welcomed by the mayor of Sylacauga, Doug Murphree. The club had their picture made with the mayor as he welcomed them to his city. After lunch they students visited Blue Bell Ice Creamery and discovered the history of the Texan-based business and toured the operations and watch ice cream being processed and packed. They were given free samples of ice cream and enjoyed the ice cream parlor in the plant. The History@Snead club allows students the opportunity to visit historic sites, as well as work on preservation projects on the campus of Snead State Community College. On Friday, Dec. 5, 2014, the History@Snead club had their Christmas breakfast and meeting. The club met at Cracker Barrel in Guntersville for a Christmas breakfast and then visited the Guntersville Museum where they viewed the exhibits of the museum, the festival of trees, and was presented a program on the history of Guntersville. Mr. Larry Smith, a local historian and writer, discussed his forthcoming book on the Monrovian missionaries who came to the area to minister to the local American Indians.

Mr. Smith informed the club of the role of local American Indians and of the missionaries goal of helping and Christianizing them. The History@Snead club is excited about the upcoming year when they will be planning trips to Desoto Caverns, The Shrine of the Most Blessed Sacrament, and an exciting trip to Nashville, Tenn., to visit the Parthenon and the Hermitage, the home of President Andrew Jackson. History@ Snead club members are comprised of various majors within the college and also provide service within Snead by presenting history presentations, celebrating Constitution Day, and preserving artifacts of Snead’s vast history.
