You would also know that ZooNews Digest pre-dates any of the others. It was there before FaceBook. It was there shortly after the internet became popular and was a 'Blog' before the word had been invented. ZooNews Digest reaches zoo people. So you may or may not know that contrary to all the designs and objects we produce, that eco-sustainability and reusability are factors very important to us.Recently we approached the Restart Project, to discuss an idea where dead objects they try to resurrect may be appropriated for new use. During The Restart Parties, inevitably some products will go through their doors with no ability to be mended or brought back to life, and those objects will end up in the bin. Your average printer might be worth less than £50 but is full of components that can be harvested and used to create something entirely new, usually when an item breaks down it isn’t the mechanical components that have failed, but rather the PCB’s and other electronics, motors and moving parts are rarely the culprit (oddly) so why should they suffer the same fate as the rest of the product?
Why not take something like that and produce something entirely new?A few months back we were shown a proposed design for a kitchen blender that could be made from modular 3D printed parts and bought motors, and it got us thinking; with our neighbours here at Makerversity, couldn’t we finally produce something that is made not from new parts but the sum of other products? From this the idea of the “re-use cookbook” was born. The aim of the project is to produce a series of recipes that would allow a user to create something entirely new that could be of use, and with the number of motors and switches that you can harvest from the detritus of broken electronics, why not aim for things we might use everyday in the house, or have coveted for our home but couldn’t afford? Also why can’t up cycled electronics be beautiful? So that’s what we’re aiming to do.In our own line of business, the way we run our 3D printers and other tools to the very edge of their capabilities generates a lot of damaged parts, that while no longer useful for their intended purpose, can be renewed in a new manner.
With today being Shrove Tuesday, we decided to take our theory and make it a reality with our very first alpha test! The two black squares above are damaged heated bed elements for an Ultimaker 2. I had joked about pairing them up into a panini press, and we probably will be doing that eventually, but we decided it’d be more awesome to use them as a hot plate to make pancakes on, so that’s exactly what we did!Cheap 195 55 R15 TiresThe lovely Carolina of Restart took the helm in cooking, but not before TRP took an old laptop power supply and wired them into the heated build plate, getting us up to 100degreesEventually with some patience and the much better cooking skills of others, we saw the butter melt and our eyes light up with the prospect of pancakesBehold our creations! With the simple application and production of what would eventually become a fleshed out “product” someone can make or potentially purchase for themselves, the first chapter in the cookbook is produced! We’re excited to see what comes to use next, Paul for sure wants a blender for use at home, so maybe that’s next on the map!Want to see what TRP had to say about this project themselves? Robots for Good in the Press 2052 is partnerting up with Wevovler to bring you Robots for Good! So you might have heard of Robots for Good, a project that we at 2052 and a whole slew of other incredibly talented people are working on! We’re printing and modding the incredible inMoov robot, so that a kid in a hospital can wear a VR headset, and control this robot which will go out to London Zoo (as our testing ground) so that the kid can experience the outside world ;) Experimenting with colorFabb filament to try and get full translucency. Here’s some WIP of the ghost from destiny, we’re total fanboys here and we wanted to have our own to keep in the studio!
In December, Paul of 2052 was with Makerversity at Autodesk University in Las Vegas, showing off Makerversity DIY, a series of lessons to help inject STEAM and STEM lessons back into schools suffering budget problems. Paul was helping the kids learn about 3D printing, and during the class they built a stool and table made with 3D printed components! Many thanks to Chris Waggot for the photos Learn more about our castable and flexible resins! 3D printing in bronze in the studio 2052 has been working with e-nable on finding design solutions to improve the prosthetics. This is our iteration of the cyborg best prosthetic, using a FormLabs form1+ to determine tolerance discrepancies, we can begin the first steroids towards improving the design. Parallel to this we’ve been working with ninjaflex filament to produce better finger tips with a more human like feedback when gripping stuff! Designing jewellery derived from our decay algorithm ;) Proudly produced on a form1+
