There are a few things you can try on your own in order to address this issue, including checking water heater settings and troubleshooting to the extent that you identify whether the temperature fluctuations occur throughout your home’s plumbing system or are isolated to just one faucet.  Otherwise, we recommend calling a plumber to professionally diagnose and address the issue. There are really two different scenarios that this question may be describing, each of which requires a little bit different answer.  What can I do if the temperature of the water from the spout does not match what’s shown on the control knob (in other words, if the control knob says the water should be hot, but it’s actually cold – or vice versa)?  If the water temperature is less than what’s shown on the control knob, it may simply be that you need to increase the water temperature setting on your hot water hater. 

Otherwise, however, you’d generally want to call a professional plumber if this is the scenario you’re experiencing.  The possibilities are many – it could be that the anti-scald ring is set at far too cool a setting or that you’re experiencing a tempering valve problem (note below), pressure balance valve problem, mixing problem in a nearby faucet on the same plumbing system, or a water heater problem.  You may be able to eliminate the possibility of having a water heater problem by checking water temperature consistency at other faucets in the home.  If the problem seems to be isolated to just one sink, shower, or tub, the water heater is most likely operating properly, and one of the other issues mentioned here is the culprit. What can I do if the temperature fluctuates during water flow (in other words, the shower starts with hot water, then gets cold, and then gets hot again)?  Most modern faucets have both pressure and temperature balance features that will dynamically compensate for fluctuations in both.

A professional plumber will be able to diagnose and address the issue. As mentioned above, a faulty tempering valve may be the culprit in several circumstances.  In short, a tempering valve is a device intended to mix hot and cold water together in order to maintain a desired temperature.  Tempering valves are often built into shower controls (as well as other fixtures, such as kitchen sinks or certain boiler systems).  Inconsistent temperatures can be caused by a “sticky” tempering valve that results when scale forms on the inside of the valve itself.  In extreme cases, the valve will often jump back and forth when this occurs.   If you believe your tempering valve may be the issue, call a professional plumber to investigate. This kind of issue can be trickier than it may first appear!  Be sure that your water heater is set properly (and safely), and also check to see whether the issue is isolated to just one faucet or not.  You may be able to resolve the issue by replacing the faucet if it’s an older-model fixture. 

If some basic troubleshooting doesn’t resolve the issue, call a professional plumber for assistance.
