The cartridge has seals that shut off the water supply when you turn the handle to the off position. A leak is usually a sign one or more of the cartridge seals are faulty. If you own a Moen single handle shower faucet, chances are good it has a 1225 cartridge. Moen shower cartridge replacement for the 1225 cartridge is a straight forward process that most homeowners and renters can perform themselves. Replacement cartridges for Moen are available online and at home improvement centers. Tools and Materials Needed for Moen Shower Cartridge ReplacementTowel Moen cartridge puller (optional) Replacement Moen 1225 cartridge Moen Shower Cartridge Replacement – Removing The Faulty CartridgeFind the water shut off valve to the shower. Most often there is an access panel in the adjacent room of the shower fixture wall. Locate the access panel, which might be in a closet, and turn the shut off valves clockwise to turn off the water supply.
Turn on the Moen shower faucet to allow any residual water to drain from the lines. Once there is no more water draining, turn off the shower faucet. The escutcheon plate is the large decorative plate that covers the rough plumbing hole and surrounds the cartridge. Pull the escutcheon plate away from the wall. Grab the metal or plastic sleeve covering the shower cartridge and valve assembly and pull it away from the wall. Find the c-clip securing the Moen 1225 cartridge to the shower valve. The clip is visible and should be slightly raised. The clip is near the front of the cartridge. Some Moen shower cartridges use two clips, one up front and one near the back of the cartridge. Pull the clip out with a pair of needle nose pliers. Grab the tip of the Moen 1225 cartridge with a pair of slip-joint pliers, and pull the cartridge straight out of the shower valve. If the cartridge does not pull out with the pliers, it might be necessary to use a Moen cartridge puller. Cartridge pullers for Moen are available at home improvement centers.
They lock over the shower valve and pull the cartridge out while using the shower valve for leverage. Place the handle adapter over the end of the Moen cartridge and secure it with the retaining screw. Push the handle over the shower valve, and secure the handle with the screw.
If you have a rotary handle, push the center cover plate over the top of the handle until it snaps into place. Turn on the water supply valves.
