Non Grata T-Shirt

Lars von Trier and his extended cut of the first volume of “Nymphomaniac” arrived at the today, though the filmmaker technically stuck to his pledge to no longer do press. The director showed up at the press conference wearing a t-shirt that read “Persona Non Grata: Official Selection” underneath the official logo of the Cannes Film Festival (where he was infamously was declared persona non grata at a press conference two years ago). But after taking a few photos with members of his “Nymphomaniac” cast, von Trier took off and let his cast do the talking for him. Uma Thurman, Christian Slater, Stellan Skarsgård, Stacy Martin and Shia LaBeouf had those honors, though LaBeouf decided to use it as an opportunity for some more “performance art.”  When asked a question about the film, LaBeouf simply said: “When the seagulls follow the trawler it is because they think sardines will be thrown into the sea. Thank you very much.” And then walked out of the room (you can watch a short video of the stunt here).
The quote refers to soccer player Eric Cantona, who said the same thing at a press conference in 1995 related to him having kicked an “abusive spectator.” Which suggests that LaBeouf was deliberately plagiarizing Canton in a follow up to his plagiarizing a short film late last year, which may or may not have been intentional too? Either way, LaBeouf succeeded at getting some attention in Berlin, with even his fellow cast members all gasping as he took off. You can read what they sincerely had to offer the press conference in the absence of both von Trier and LaBeouf here. Danish bad boy Lars von Trier came to Berlin today for the world premiere of the director’s cut of Nymphomaniac, Vol. 1. He maintained his vow to refrain from all public statements, and did not attend the press conference. But he had a message, nevertheless. At the photo call preceding the Nymphomaniac panel, the helmer sported a t-shirt emblazoned with the Cannes Film Festival logo followed by the words “Persona Non Grata, Official Selection.”
The sartorial choice was a nod to 2011 when von Trier was dubbed a persona non grata by Cannes for Nazi-flavored comments he made at a press conference for Melancholia. General Grabber Tire PressureShia LaBeouf, a Nymphomaniac co-star who’s had his own share of controversial headlines of late, answered no questions but offered up a cryptic comment: “When the seagulls follow the trawler it is because they think sardines will be thrown into the sea.” Rv Rentals Sumter ScWith that, he said, “Thank you very much” and left the dais. The room was temporarily stunned as nervous laughter filtered through – including from the actors still assembled: Uma Thurman, Christian Slater, Stellan Skarsgård and Stacy Martin.
More seriously, Thurman called working with von Trier, “One of the best days of my life.” Slater said he was “patient and gentle… You kind of want to do anything for him.” Skarsgård, the director’s long-time collaborator, commented, “It’s easier to work with him than with most directors… He’s a very funny man. You’ve got to learn to laugh at him a lot more.” To a query about whether the uncut Nymphomaniac Vol. 2 will be shown in Cannes, producer Louise Vesth said, “We don’t say that yet… You saw the t-shirt.” Subscribe to Deadline Breaking News Alerts and keep your inbox happyThierry Fremaux says he called the controversial Danish filmmaker and asked him for his own T-shirt. Cannes Film Festival director Thierry Fremaux on Thursday talked about his relationship with Danish filmmaker Lars von Trier during his annual presentation of the fest's competition and other lineup. He was asked by a journalist what he thought when von Trier wore a T-shirt saying "Persona non grata" at the Berlin festival in February, which screened Nymphomaniac: Volume 1.
The shirt was a reference to what Cannes organizers called the controversial director after he called himself a Nazi and expressed sympathy for Hitler during a press conference on the Croisette in 2011. PHOTOS: 14 Character Posters for 'Nymphomaniac' Fremaux said Thursday that he called von Trier after his Berlin appearance and asked him if he could also get such a T-shirt. He added that ‎the filmmaker told him he was glad Fremaux took the stunt as a joke and promised to send him one. However, Fremaux told the Cannes press conference that he was still waiting for the T-shirt. Von Trier wore the T-shirt in Berlin but continued the silence that he has displayed since his unpopular Cannes comments. Late last year, there had been some talk that the second part of Nymphomaniac could screen in Cannes. Fremaux said back then that the Danish director was welcome back to the festival. Shia LaBeouf Storms Out BERLIN — Danish director may be persona non grata in Cannes, but he was clearly missed at the press conference for “Nymphomaniac – Volume 1” at the on Sunday. But the maverick helmer was in the German capital, and appeared at the film’s photo call in a black T-shirt with the Cannes logo on it, and the words “Persona non grata” emblazoned beneath. During the press conference, the helmer’s modus operandi was very much the focus of all the actors’ comments. “I’ve never been on a film where the director was so in command of every department,” said Christian Slater. “He has such soul.. a very kind heart.” “It is not challenging at all to work with him,” said von Trier regular Stellan Skarsgard. “It is easier, and more fun.” SEE MORE: Shia LaBeouf Wears Paper Bag on Head to ‘Nymphomaniac’ Berlin Premiere “Lars kept telling me that I was over-acting, but that is nothing new,” said , who said she was given a script with a seven-page monologue.
“We kept doing these 25 minute takes all day. It was unbelievably lively, refreshing, and like acting almost in the theater or acting for the first time in a film.” “Lars creates great conversations, great dialogue about subjects we may not always feel comfortable with,” said the film’s first-time actress, Stacy Martin. The hero-worshipping must have been too much for the tortured, slovenly-dressed Shia Laboeuf (he sported a filthy truckers’ cap, a hoodie and purple socks). “When seagulls follow the trawler it is because they think sardines will be thrown into the sea,” stated LaBeouf enigmatically, before abruptly walking off stage 10 minutes into the conference. “The second part is slower, goes more to the heart of Lars’ theme, it is more explicit,” said Louise Vesth, the film’s producer. She ducked questions about when the second, longer version will get a festival screening, but did not deny that it might show up in Cannes in May. Account/Project Coordinator (Ad Agency)
