To help prevent accidents parents should “baby proof” their home before their child starts crawling. A general rule is to get on your knees so you see your home from your baby’s perspective and secure anything you think might harm them. Parents should store medicines, personal care products and cleaning supplies in areas where your child cannot get to them. You can secure those areas by using cabinet locks, latches, safety gates, and doorknob covers. The Kohl’s Safe at Home Safety Checklist recommends you inspect you home room by room and respond appropriately. Beginning with the kitchen, these are things can be done without purchasing any childproofing products. Under no circumstances should you hold a child while cooking. Foods and liquids could splatter and possibly burn them. According to Safe Kids in 2012, more than 136,000 children across the country, including more than 67,000 children 4 and under were injured due to a fire or burn and treated in emergency rooms.
While cooking, make sure to use the back burners and turn the handles of the pot away to prevent children from pulling hot food down on themselves. Unplug all small appliances left out on counters, tables, etc. after using them because children could easily turn them on. Store cleaning supplies separately from food and if you transfer anything from its original packaging, make sure it is labeled clearly, so there will not be misinterpretation about the contents. In the kitchen, install cabinet latches or locks specifically on cabinets a child could reach and those that contain dangerous or poisonous items. Nine out of 10 poisonings happen at home. If possible, use a safety gate to keep your child out of the kitchen, especially if you may be distracted while you are cooking. A child can drown in as little as one inch of water. Most parents are aware of the measures they need to take to prevent their child from drowning at pools and lakes, but what about at home? Place a doorknob cover on the bathroom door to make it difficult for children to get in the bathroom without the help of an adult.
Use a toilet lock because children are top heavy and could topple over in the toilet and not be able to pull themselves out. Check the temperature of bathwater by using a thermometer or your elbow to make sure it is not too hot. When bathing a child, use touch supervision. That means you should always be close enough to have at least one hand on the child at all times. Never leave a child in the bathtub alone or under the supervision of another child. If you have a pool, you should have a fence that is at least six feet with a self-latching gate and the pool should have an anti-entrapment drain cover. The other half of the Kohl’s Safe at Home mission is to discuss with parents of infants, one month to one year old, how to reduce the risk of sleep related infant death. Unintentional suffocation is the leading cause of injury-related death among children under 1 year of age. Data from Safe Kids states nearly three-quarters of suffocation deaths among infants are from accidental suffocation or strangulation in bed.
In the bedroom, make sure that children are on their back sleeping on a firm surface without any loose soft or fluffy items in the crib. Keeping the crib bare helps reduce the risk of SIDS, Sudden Infant Death Syndrome, and accidental suffocation. Make sure the furniture is secured with brackets or wall straps to prevent tip overs. Do not store toys or anything that may attract children to climb on top of furniture. Buy toys that are age appropriate for your child. In 2011, Safe Kids estimated 262,300 children were treated in an emergency room for a toy-related injury.  Toys designed for older children may not be as sturdy and could have small parts that could break off and become a choking hazard. Anything that can pass through a paper towel roll can be a choking hazard. Periodically inspect your child’s toys, especially the ones they love the most, to make sure that they are still safe. Cords on mini blinds and shades can wrap around a child’s neck. Make sure all windows have safety locks and that blind cords have safety tassels or wind-up cord keepers on them to store the excess string.
According to Safe Kids a child dies every week from a TV tip over accident. If possible, you should mount televisions or use a wall strap to prevent TV tip over accidents. If you have an older television make sure it is on a low sturdy television stand. If you have stairs in your home make, sure you are using a baby safety gate at the top and bottom of the stairs. Doggy gates are not appropriate because they are sometimes spring loaded and a child could easily push them and dislodge them. Unintentional falls are the leading cause of non-fatal injuries for children in the United States. Falls are so prevalent because they can occur anywhere. Rugs and runners should be slip resistant or use padding or tape to prevent falls. Make sure, when using baby items like high chairs, bumbo seats, strollers, activity centers, etc. that they are being used properly. Read the directions on assembly and use. Parents should determine if their child is ready to use a toy as well.  A toy may be listed to for 4-6 months but your child may not have mastered the motor skill, ex. sitting up unassisted, for them to enjoy that toy just yet.
In addition, check websites like the Consumer Product Safety Commission for recalled products. Place corner guards on sharp edges of tables and counters. Make sure that there are outlet covers in each electrical socket. Light bulbs should also be in every light fixture as well. No sockets should be left exposed because children can put their fingers or objects inside them. Safe Kids says eighty-eight percent of all fire-related deaths are due to home fires, so every home should have a working smoke detector. Check the batteries every month and replace them every year. Carbon monoxide is dangerous because it odorless, colorless, tasteless and potentially deadly.  Combination detectors can be purchased so you can have protection from both dangers.  Every family should have a fire escape plan and should practice it so they will know what to do during a fire. In addition, you should take you children to health fairs or community events so they can become acquainted with firefighters, police officers, etc.
