Vaccinations against contagious and deadly diseases (such as rabies, canine parvovirus, canine distemper, canine bordetella, feline leukemia, feline panleukopenia, and other serious diseases) are important to protect your pet’s health. Vaccination type and frequency of inoculation may vary based on your pet’s age and medical condition. Please discuss a suitable vaccination plan with your pet’s veterinarian at its annual wellness exam. California state law requires that all dogs older than four months of age be currently vaccinated against rabies. Los Angeles County  and City Code requires rabies vaccinations for cats as well as dogs. Rabies vaccinations may be effective for either one year or three years. The first rabies vaccination is effective for one year. After the first year’s vaccination, succeeding rabies vaccinations are effective for three years. The Animal Care and Control Department offers low-cost vaccinations for dogs and cats and provides mobile vaccination and microchip clinics each spring and summer in communities throughout our service area.
It is very important that you maintain current vaccinations for your pet’s health and well being. Animals can become exposed to sick animals through contact between yard fencing, at parks, or other places of congregation. Ensuring your pet’s health is protected will eliminate or reduce potential medical expenses and your family’s worry over an ill pet.
