Here's her Mickey Mouse cap," Larson said. "And these are Sonja's softball hats from Ely [High School]."After the hats came a bat, ball and two gloves. Then the cupcake-shaped pillow Sonja embroidered in a home economics class. Then a threadbare pink blanket, Sonja's favorite as a little girl.Earlier, Ada showed off the latest scrapbook she made in Sonja's memory, with pages for almost each of her 18 years. There were baby pictures and pictures from her last Thanksgiving and Christmas. There were pictures in ballerina outfits and prom gowns. There were photographs of birthday parties at the family's home in Pompano Beach and a piano recital in Fort Lauderdale. Through them all, Sonja Larson smiled. This is how Ada Larson wants to remember her daughter; the beautiful life, not the horrific death.Anyone who remembers what happened in Gainesville in late August 1990 knows that's not easy."It was just so brutal," Jim Larson, Sonja's brother, said last week. "There's just no worse way a girl could die."
The gruesome details of Danny Rolling's savagery have been well chronicled. On the weekend before the fall semester began, he killed five college students in their apartments, plunging the University of Florida and the surrounding community into fear.He stabbed and mutilated his victims, sexually assaulted three of the four women and decapitated one. The three murder scenes were found on successive days, and by the time the final bodies were found Gainesville was in full-blown panic. Some students armed themselves with mace and clubs. Others simply packed their bags and left, never to return.Rolling began with Larson and her roommate, Christina Powell, 17, continued with Christa Hoyt, 18, and ended with Manny Taboada, 23, and Tracy Paules, 23, both of Miami-Dade County. At 6 p.m. Wednesday, barring any last-minute delays, Rolling will be executed by lethal injection. Ada Larson plans to be in the death chamber at Florida State Prison to witness."I don't particularly want to do it," said Ada, 68.
"But it's something I need to do. And for my husband."Ada's husband, Jim, died of cancer 10 years ago.The victims' families are outraged that it's taken so long to carry out the sentence, more than 16 years after the murders and more than 12 since Rolling gave a courtroom confession. Rolling has outlasted two of the victims' fathers, including Hoyt's father, Gary Hoyt, who died in 2000.The day Rolling was sentenced to death, Mario Taboada, Manny's brother, confronted Rolling in the courtroom, pointing at him and shouting, "Five years -- you're going down in five!"Mario Taboada will travel to Starke to gather with other victim relatives and friends, but he will not be inside the death chamber on Wednesday. The family has designated Manny's uncle, Antonio Illa, and cousin, Alex Illa, as witnesses."I tried to talk them out of it, because I just don't believe this scum really deserves the attention," said Taboada, of Miami. "He's a loser and that's it."Laurie Lahey, Tracy Paules' sister, will witness along with her mother, Ricky Paules."
I'm going for my sister, because I know she'd do it for me," said Lahey, 42, of Dallas. "Justice needs to be done ... I don't want to cry, because I don't want him to think that I'm crying for him. If I cry, it's because I ache for her."During an interview last week, Ada Larson sat beside a coffee table piled with family photographs, scrapbooks and case documents. From a big brown envelope, she pulled out a motion that Rolling's lawyers filed to stop the execution."He's trying to get out of it by saying it's cruel and unusual punishment," Ada said. "How can [lethal injection] be cruel, considering what he did? It's a cakewalk, compared to what he did. I think he ought to be stabbed as many times as he stabbed all his victims."`I was so proud of her'Laurie Lahey said she doesn't dance anymore. Dancing was something she always did with her younger sister, Tracy Paules. She also doesn't buy birthday or anniversary cards anymore, because she always teamed up with her sister for that. They grew up in Palm Springs North, a small community near Miami Lakes in northwest Miami-Dade.
