A rescue dog is a dog that is rescued from a possible euthanasia after being found as a stray, a dog that has been saved from an abusive or neglectful home by an animal rescue organisation such as the RSPCA in the UK or the ASPCA in the USA. The majority of dogs that arrive in rescue centres are between six months and three years of age and weigh more than fifty pounds.[] Any breed of dog can arrive in a rescue centre though some breeds are more prevalent than others. In the UK, Staffordshire Bull Terriers or Bull Terrier crossbreeds make up a large proportion of all dogs in rescue simply because of their popularity amongst the low population in general.

Labelling a breed as aggressive makes those dogs more difficult to rehome.[1] Many rescue dogs are rehomed quickly, but some wait longer for a home. This may be particularly true when the rescue dog is older. Some agencies provide ongoing health care and support for older dogs after they have been placed. There are several charities dedicated to rescuing and rehoming older dogs. A study conducted by the United States National Council on Pet Population Study and Policy (NCPPSP) in 1998 found that the main reasons for pets being relinquished are: family moving, landlord will not allow pets, too many animals in household, cost of keeping the pet, owner is having personal problems, inadequate facilities, and no homes available for puppies. The study found that 47.7% of dogs turned in to shelters were not altered (spayed or neutered), 33% had not been to a veterinarian, and 96% of dogs had no obedience training. The conclusion of the researchers was that the owners who were relinquishing their pets did not have the knowledge to be responsible dog owners, and that educational programs aimed at present and prospective owners would reduce the number of dogs relinquished to animal shelters.

Established in 1986 Pet Patrol has found homes for about 3000 cats in that time. Our cats come from all different situations; abandoned in the country, owner reliquished, born in a shed and shelters with a high euthanization rate. They are kept in foster homes and not kennels therefore we are able to learn about their personalities and can find them an appropriate home. All our cats are spayed or neutered, vaccinated and any health concerns are addressed before they are available for adoption. Pet Patrol asks for an adoption donation of $175 to help offset the inital Vet costs. Wondering where your donation goes? First and foremost we take care of the pets already in our care. We currently have several special needs pets that require medications, special foods and more frequent vet care. Jagger has IBD which took several costly vet visits to diagnose. He also requires a special diet. Jagger is still waiting for a fun active home to take him in. Jack also has diabetes. He's such a good boy for his shots, but his insulin and food all need to be paid for by the rescue. GRAB also offers temporary foster care for pet owners that find themselves unable to care for their furry families. Instead of separating them permanently a generous foster home cares for the pet as their own until their owners find themselves in a position once again to care for their pet. We also have several kittens born this summer that will be needing vaccines and neutering. Financial donations go towards vet care and also supplies that aren't donated directly. GRAB is entirely non-profit so you can be sure that your donation is going directly to the animals that need it.
