The place is flush with couture, including — somewhere in the 470 boxes of clothing — an Oscar de la Renta sweater.

There are china sets and infant car seats, crystal, hangers, DVDs, stuffed animals and several items for which even Lehigh professors can't quite figure out the purpose. These treasures really are cast-offs, mostly from Lehigh students moving out for the semester, and some from faculty and staff. Rather than being tossed in the trash, 20 tons of items have been collected for a gigantic yard sale. The Great South Side Sale is scheduled from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Saturday under a giant tent at E. Fourth and Buchanan streets in Bethlehem. "We keep waste off the streets in the neighborhoods, but we also see to it that lots of things don't go to waste," said organizer Kim Carrell-Smith, a Lehigh professor. "It's also really important in a low-income community to have goods available … and many of the things we get are pretty expensive wonderful stuff." Last year the sale — where most items go for a dollar or two — raised nearly $20,000. The proceeds cover field trips for South Side schools, three after-school homework clubs and other programs for South Side children.

Janysa Morales of Allentown thought it so worthy a cause she got her dad to donate this year, and has spent a week after graduation helping to sort the donations."I volunteer because the cause is really meaningful to the South Side community," she said. "It goes to help the students."Among the student programs the sale has paid for, she said, are tickets to the DaVinci Science Center, Lehigh Valley Zoo, Pennsylvania Shakespeare Festival and bowling (they play a math game with the scoring). The idea for the sale began in 1991, when Carrell-Smith and her husband, also a Lehigh professor, were walking their dog around the South Side and saw Lehigh students throwing away many nice things. They went Dumpster diving, salvaging some items for donations and a garage sale that netted $15 for community organizations. They launched the Great South Side Sale in 1996 and, with the help of the Lehigh Community Services Office, expanded it into the community event coveted by South Side neighborhoods and bargain hunters all over.

Carrell-Smith said this year is no different than previous years, where there is a bulk of sheets, comforters, hangers and crystal. Unusual to the sale are a few baby items, likely donated by staff and faculty, and some kitschy items. One stuffed animal looks like a groundhog but dances when a speaker is stuffed inside it. Another is a plush puppy that sings songs such as Stevie Wonder's "For Once in My Life" and holds a heart that lights up with the words "I love you."Then there's a mystery box of unidentifiable items. One appears to be a multi-use tool — perhaps an interchangeable screwdriver that comes apart. It has a green light that emits a sci-fi sound. Lehigh professors couldn't quite identify it. anizers found a receipt for a $1,000 Louis Vuitton scarf, but aren't quite sure it's among the boxes of donated scarves. Some of the designer wear, like the size 8 Jacquard patterned Tory Burch pants ($250), still have a price tag on them."Come early," Carrell-Smith said. "The good stuff goes fast."
