wnRenderDate('Thursday, March 24, 2016 11:06 PM EDT', '', false); A local dog rescue group has seen a rash of Parvo cases in puppies over the past year.    It's a highly contagious virus that can quickly kill your pup.And with El Nino making for a warm winter, that means fleas and mosquitoes could be brutal this season.It's a reminder that as the temperatures warm up, the importance for vaccinations is clear.He's a three month old weimeraner mix from caddo animal shelter.A ball of joy for his foster mom, Angie Dismukes."He's a chill little puppy!" she said.But just weeks ago he looked skeletal."He ended up with pneumonia and a upper respiratory infection," Angie said. "He ended up having to go to the emergency vet back and forth for a week and a half."Baxter is on the mend from a horrible bout of parvo.Parvo is a very lethal and contagious virus and it doesn't take long to kill."Basically like the people flu, it's vomiting and diarrhea. And they become very dehydrated," said Angie.Local non-profit, Louisiana Dog Rescue, who originally pulled Baxter out of the shelter, has spent about $3,500 trying to save his life. 

"Normally we spend about $500 to get them up to date on vaccinations or spayed and neutered," said Angie.Donations have greatly helped, but the organization is always taking financial hits when treating the costly and deadly parvo virus."Parvo's been pretty bad this year. We've had several dogs with parvo," said Haley Huggins, president and co-founder of Louisiana Dog Rescue. "We just had a litter with six puppies, we lost four of them. Only two survived the parvo."Parvo is a hardy virus and can live in the soil for up to 10 years. Most cleaners can't kill it, except for bleach.And though Baxter is much better, the start of spring means warmer temperatures -- so vaccinations are a must to fight spreading diseases like distemper, leptospirosis or bordatella.Dr. Gordon Calahan of South Shreveport Animal Hospital treats the animals brought in by the Louisiana Dog Rescue. He says it's easy to prevent parvo with an inexpensive shot."But you have to vaccinate them at the right intervals. And that's where a lot of people fall short," says Dr. Calahan.

"A lot of the dogs of we see with parvo were vaccinated, but they just didn't finish the series."The dog will get shots at 6 weeks or 8 weeks, but to have long lasting immunity against parvo, they're supposed to have two shots, two to four weeks apart, after 12 weeks of age.He says the lack of vaccinations may come from misunderstandings."They may inaccurately believe that they've done everything that they've need to do, or the extra shots are a waste of money of inconvenient," he said. "But it's really the latter shots are the ones that are the most critical ones for long-term immunity."Heartworm is another big issue in our area. It breeds in the dog's heart until it kills them. "Once the mosquitoes start coming out, if [your dog] is not on heartworm prevention, they're going to get heartworm," Huggins.Rescue dog, Foxy, can't be adopted until she finishes treatment."You can prevent it with a $10 preventative a month, and a lot of people just don't do it," said Huggins.For Baxter, parvo almost cut his story short a few weeks ago."

Even the emergency vet said, 'I don't think he's going to make it,'" said Angie.But, the little guy has a happy ending: a permanent home!
