Ask a QuestionAbout Rhodesian Ridgebacks AnonymousHi, I have just got a Rhodesian Ridgeback mix Mastiff puppy who is 4 months old and small. The breeder fed him on adult dog food and he smelled horrible. I have him now and he smells so much better plus he has 4 meals a day of puppy food. Can you tell me how big he will be thank you?
1 CommentAnonymousMixes are very difficult to range in size already and if the person who whelped him fed him on adult food, then he missed out on a tremendous amount of nutrients that he needed as a puppy. He could be fine, and grow to be the average of the two breeds, or he could be smaller than them both because of the lack of nutrients as a young pup. Until he is a year old, you won't know how be he really is going to be. Keep him on puppy food and just love him for who he is, big or small.ryanvogt13Hey everyone, just a guesstimation, I have a 6 1/2 month old Rhodesian Ridgeback, male, 73lbs. The Ridgeback can take up to 2 years to mature, but should be at the adult height at about 1 1/2 and take the last half of the year to fill out. However, to determine the likely-hood of size for your pup is to look at the parents and grandparents of the puppy. A Rhodesian Ridgeback that is over 90 lbs is a larger version of the original Ridgeback and should be monitored more closely for joint issues as the puppy grows and when he/she gets into his/her senior years. At 6 1/2 months old, your Rhodesian Ridgeback is quite large for his age, so taking him to the vet to confirm that he is healthy is always a good idea. Are they Champion lion hunters? 1 CommentAnonymousRhodesian Ridgebacks, like most dogs, will use their nose to track down game such as rabbits and game birds which they will chase.
Cats are fair game anywhere. However, Ridgebacks do not hunt Lion. They were used by a hunter on horseback in packs of 6 or 8 dogs much like the English hunting hound they would run loose pick up the scent trail of a Lion. They would run with it until the Lion was exhausted, then they would circle the Lion keeping the Lion turning as the dogs behind the Lion took turns to nip in and bite the Lions flank. The idea being that the hunter following would follow the noise made by the dogs and get there in time to shoot the Lion before the Lion killed too many of the dogs and escaped.AnonymousHow do you train a Rhodesian Ridgeback and what are some techniques? 1 CommentAnonymousContact your local positive reinforcement trainer.
