Der Name des Shetland Sheepdog ist auf seine Herkunft zurückzuführen und verrät, dass die beliebte Rasse ursprünglich von den Shetlandinseln vor Schottland stammt. Entstanden ist der Shetland Sheepdog durch die Verpaarungen von Border Collies und Grönlandhunden. Durch die Einkreuzung von Collies entstand der Shetland Sheepdog, wie wir ihn heute kennen. Er wurde eingesetzt um über Schafherden sowie Haus und Hof zu wachen. Inzwischen wird er für diese Aufgabe, trotz seiner idealen Voraussetzungen, jedoch kaum noch genutzt. Stattdessen etablierte er sich als beliebter Rettungs- und Therapiehund. Eine ländliche Umgebung ist für den aktiven Shetland Sheepdog von Vorteil. Es ist möglich ihn der Wohnung zu halten, sofern er genügend Bewegung bekommt. Einfache Spaziergänge reichen dem ursprünglichen Hütehund jedoch nicht.

Sie muss auch auf geistiger Ebene gefordert und gefördert werden. Dazu eignet sich zum Beispiel eine Hundesportart wie Agility oder DogDancing. Wenn er entsprechend ausgelastet wird, ist der Shetland Sheepdog auch für Familien geeignet. Fremden gegenüber kann der auch als "Sheltie" bekannte Vierbeiner manchmal etwas reserviert sein, aggressiv ist er aber nicht. Wichtiger als die Wohnsituation, ist beim Shetland Sheepdog die Bewegung: Kann er sich bei Spaziergängen und Hundesport austoben, ist es auch möglich ihn in der Wohnung zu halten.
