I have one male and one female left out of a litter of 4....MASS JOINT RESCUE: The Waihi Beach surf life saving club, coastguard and Newmont's Mine rescue team,worked together to rescue a poodle from a ledge 30 metres above sea level. A dog who became trapped on a ledge 30 metres above the sea for almost 10 hours was reunited with his owners after a joint rescue effort.Zac the poodle escaped the close call unscathed after  being propelled to safety by a specialised trained mine rescue team. The cliff-side rescue started about 7am on Auckland Anniversary Day at the southern end of Waihi Beach, western Bay of Plenty,  when John Carey headed out with his nine-year-old poodle for a daily walk. The pair took the usual route, heading through the park to the cliff top above Bowentown beach.Being a standard breed poodle, hunting and exploring are part of Zac's nature, said owner Kay Carey."

On a final trip out, lifeguards spotted the black poodle perched precariously on a ledge about 30metres above the ocean's high tide. 

"He must have skidded down off the cliff on his backside, landing on a ledge," said Carey."It was a miracle really, he could of gone off into the sea. We could see him, but we thought 'how are we going to get to him'?"With no way up or down, Zac was stuck for almost 10 hours with no food or water.Newmont's Mine Rescue Team, which operates out of the Waihi mines, were called in with specialist abseiling gear to reach Zac. Newmont Waihi Gold Mines Rescue Coordinator Peter Lowe said the team set up a roping system with two anchor points above Zac. "It was impossible to get him down, and impossible to get him up."Rescuers Troy Hargreaves was strapped in and repelled down onto the perch, equipped with doggy treats and water. "Troy said the dog was pretty calm, but he could see it in his eyes, he knew he was stuck."After freeing Zac's legs from the tree roots, Troy strapped Zac into a rescue triangle and clipped in the carabiners to his own harness. The pair then abseiled down onto a small piece of beach among the rocks."

I think the dog had his legs around Troy's neck."Zac was transported to Anzac Bay in the surf club IRB where he was reunited with his owners. "I think I'm still in shock that we got him back, we owe so many people thank-yous," said Carey. Apart from being thirsty and hungry, Zac escaped unscathed.Carey said her and her husband could not thank the local community and emergency services enough for their efforts. "It's just so amazing how many people helped look for him."Lowe said all five of the rescuers involved have dogs of their own and were thrilled they could help save Zac. "There were a lot of people out searching for him, and they could of given up but they didn't.
