The water level on both lagged well below normal, even though the pipes were clear. We assumed that the problem was in our septic system. Our plumber suspected otherwise.He checked the tank in our downstairs toilet. “Oh, yeah,” he said. Got knocked out of place.”He slipped the small mystery tube into the big mystery tube. Same for the other toilet. In 10 minutes he was gone.When I saw the bill, for $120, one thought came to mind: I chose the wrong profession. And then, this week the Internet buzzed with images of Oprah Winfrey working on her toilet, because the job is so easy that even billionaires wouldn’t think to call a plumber.It’s time for Potty Training 102.For help with understanding the inner workings of the throne, I called on Lou Manfredini, a Chicago-based contractor and hardware store owner who hosts the “HouseSmarts” television program;

Lorren Schlotfeldt, master plumber and instructor of plumbing technology at Montana State University, Northern; and Rex Cauldwell, an author of several home-maintenance books, including “Plumbing Complete” (Taunton, 2009). Their counsel on toilet maintenance and replacement would sound eerily familiar to any parents easing their own child toward the commode. Nothing bad is going to happen. “Toilets are the easiest project in plumbing,” Mr. Schlotfeldt said. “I’d have anyone do it.”It turns out he’s right. Even swapping out a toilet is fairly easy, I found, especially if you have a partner. But with some well-informed troubleshooting and a few replacement parts, you can spare yourself that expense, and perhaps even upgrade to a more efficient system in the process. Of course, replacement parts aren’t always necessary. Ninety percent of the time, the reason your toilet doesn’t flush correctly is because the holes beneath the rim are clogged,” Mr. Manfredini said.

“One of the first things a plumber will do is scrape open all those holes.” He suggested using a wire coat hanger.“Then pour in some calcium-lime cleaner, flush the toilet halfway so it gets into your system and leave it overnight,” he added.Other issues, my panelists said, typically involve the so-called “flapper valve” that sits at the bottom of the tank and can warp with age. This leads to situations where you must hold down the toilet handle to fully drain the tank, or you might hear water leaking into the tank after flushing.Replacement valves cost around $5, and typically a universal model will work, but note your toilet’s brand and bring a photo of the inside of the tank when you shop. The replacement process takes all of two minutes, Mr. Manfredini said, and requires no tools.If you hear water filling in the tank incessantly, the problem is most likely your “fill valve,” which is known as the “big mystery tube” among people who make plumbers giddy. To find it, look for the open pipe attached to the water line, and be sure the water actually flows into it.

Floats, the big round bulbs in older toilets that are being phased out by smaller plastic pieces, include a water-level adjustment mechanism. If that slips out of place, readjust it so that the water remains roughly a half inch below the fill valve. You can replace toilet parts separately or, for around $20, you can buy a full kit. Old five-gallon toilets can be upgraded to more efficient units this way. An even better option, the panelists said, is a dual-flush kit system that lets users choose a high-volume or low-volume flush. (Look for brands like Danco and HydroKit, which don’t require tank removal.) The Power Behind the Throne What you’ll need to replace your toilet. Our downstairs toilet could have used such an upgrade, but it was more than 40 years old, and thanks to our iron-laden water, it looked every bit its age. It was time to deliver this dinosaur a Dear John letter.As easy as it is to replace a toilet, you should check with your superintendent if you live in an apartment building, and newbies shouldn’t attempt it on the day of a party.

In the worst-case scenario you could flood the house — or make pit-toilet trivia the conversational centerpiece of your party.Mr. Schlotfeldt also suggested checking with your municipality’s building department for any codes pertaining to toilet-related work.Mr. Cauldwell said that, before starting, you should keep in mind that porcelain is fragile and sharp when broken. “I’ve left a lot of blood in the house, so you have to be very careful,” he said.“One big problem with the do-it-yourself arena is the instructions,” he added. “They assume everything will go perfectly, but they don’t tell you what not to do.”Here’s a partial list.Don’t try this job if you cannot locate your home’s main water shut-off valve. (Hint: it’s usually near the water heater or the electronics that control the well pump.)If the valve has a round handle and looks as if it has not been touched in many years, it may be an old-school “gate” valve. Don’t touch it, as rusted gate valves are notorious for snapping.

Call a plumber and have it swapped out. Mr. Cauldwell said that a new valve costs around $25, and a plumber can install it in an hour. If your shut-off valve has a lever, turn it off before replacing the toilet.Do not start dismantling the old toilet yet. Rather, assemble the new one in an adjacent room. And don’t leave the store with your new toilet until you audit the contents of the box, as unscrupulous “shoppers” poach parts from these boxes.Next, turn off the toilet line, flush the toilet and disconnect the water line from the tank. Scoop and sponge the remaining water.Now for the removal. Don’t expect this to go smoothly, because the two bolts at the toilet’s base will likely be rusted. If the bolts mock your wrench, behead them with a small hacksaw.Straddle the toilet, bend at the knees and lift straight up so you don’t end up in the E.R.Mr. Cauldwell suggested laying an old rug outside the bathroom and covering it with plastic. Then place the toilet on top of that and drag it away.

Remove the old wax toilet gasket, scrape the area clean and set in place a Sani Seal toilet gasket, which is foam and much more user-friendly than wax. If you have a deeply recessed subfloor — for instance, if the floor is below thick tile — you may need to stack two gaskets in order to secure the toilet firmly in place. (The included bolts will reach through the stacked gaskets.)Have a partner hold the new toilet over the bolts and then ease it into place as you guide.The last item on the list of things not to do? Do not forget that this is a big piece of pottery.If you tighten a bolt too much, the toilet will snap and you will be forced to put your fist through the bathroom wall. So tighten the bolts just enough that the toilet feels firmly in place, and if the toilet wobbles slightly, use a plastic shim to secure it. Turn on the home’s main water supply, reconnect the water line and open the valve completely. If you get any leaking, wrap the threads with plumber’s tape and try it again.
