Tudor Homes For Sale Detroit Mi

on April 18, 2015 at 5:25 AM, updated GRAND RAPIDS TOWNSHIP, MI - The Jazz Age is still alive in the Tudor house that James and Nancy Gould have owned for the past 45 years. After hosting dozens of jazz performances in the stone house as charter members of the West Michigan Jazz Society, the Goulds are downsizing. They have listed the five-bedroom house at 2150 E. Fulton Street for $689,000 with Realtor Robert J. Larson. James Gould notes jazz chanteuse Diana Krall once played the piano in the living room with her Grammy winning partners, bassist Paul Keller and guitarist Russell Malone. Krall is among a long list of jazz musicians who have played at the home during their West Michigan gigs, says Gould, a charter member of the West Michigan Jazz Society. "The people who have played here have been awarded at least 100 Grammys," says Gould, a retired lawyer. The Goulds are only the third owners of the stone house that was built in 1920 for Walter C. Winchester, the owner of a furniture and lumber company.

The living room portals still have wrought-iron monograms with the "W" from its original owners. The house, which was mostly original when they moved in, has stayed that way. "We have not pulled anything out unless we absolutely had to," said Gould. Even the telephones still have cords. Nonetheless, Larson notes most of the home has remained in "museum quality" condition. From the wrought iron raven and bell by the front door to the Art Nouveau wall sconces in the dining room and the built-in hardwood cabinets, the Goulds chose preservation over modernization during their years in the home. While the next owner may want to update the kitchen, last remodeled in the 1970s, other elements such as the polished oak flooring and leaded glass windows are in prime condition. Gould says the blue carpeting in the living room was laid over similar oak flooring. Next to the living room, there's a sunny library and study with built-in bookcases in their original glass cabinets.

The cozy room includes a fireplace with a limestone mantel. Between the living room and kitchen, there's a wallpapered dining room that's lit by nine leaded bay windows by day and in the evening, by ornate Art Nouveau wall sconces and a chandelier that are original to the house. Most of the home's four bathrooms still have their original tile imported from Italy and the commercial-style commodes. Behind the 10-paneled doors leading to the master suite, there's a full ensuite bathroom in blue Italian tile. Most of the original fixtures have been retained if possible, Gould said. In the upstairs bedrooms, the bathrooms feature the original tile and showers with bath tubs that feature foot wells. Like many mansions of its era, the servant quarters were placed at the other end of the house, over the kitchen and garage with a separate staircase. A large attic that could be converted into additional uses connects the two sleeping areas. The basement of the home is largely unfinished except for a music room that Gould installed to listen to his favorite selections from his library of more than 25,000 titles.

Most those recording have been converted to compact disks and are stored in racks in the lower level. Outdoors, the home is sited on a 1.3-acre parcel that's filled with old redbud and hawthorn trees. Located in Grand Rapids Township and the East Grand Rapids School District, it's one of the most desirable locations in the city. The big parcel could be split up for other building lots, but Gould said he decided to leave that fight to subsequent owners.
