Following up on last month's sweep of used-tire facilities, looking for the outdoor piles of tires that mosquitoes and rats love, a team from the city's Codes Compliance, Fire, Public Works and Police departments found most of the many violations they found have been fixed.The team last month checked 25 used-tire operations, checking to see if they've fixed violations of city rules on storing tires outdoors. They found plenty of violations of the city code's ban on leaving debris strewn across property, rules on outdoor storage of materials the fire code.The city code bars accumulations of debris and trash because they can house mosquitos and rodents, both of which are threats to public health. City regulations for outside storage of materials requires property owners to screen them from view.The fire code also has standards for storing flammable material, which includes tires.Something there is that doesn't love a wall, as the poet Robert Frost put it, musing on the gaps in his New Hampshire farm's stone ways opened by frost-heaved soil.

It's not quite the same issue along City Center Boulevard, but there seems to be one thing not to love about the high concrete wall that blocks blocking traffic noise from the homes on Bryant Court and Spring Road.The problem is that it blocks the neighborhood's pedestrians from the road.So the city is proposing to cut a hole in the wall. And to make sure it can still block out traffic noise it is suggesting building another, shorter wall immediately behind the opening and parallel to the main wall. Its plans call for a sidewalk and lighting, too.If you want to take a look at the plans and get a rundown on the project, city officials are hosting an information session from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Thursday June 30, at Yates Elementary School, which is at 73 Maxwell Lane.The Newport News Waterworks Department has made a fix to address longstanding problems of water main leaks that interrupted service and caused serious road damage along 16th Street.The problem was the 75-year-old pipe.The 8 -nch main, running from Wickham Ave to the Salters Creek Bridge, and more than 80 connecting service lines, was made of cast iron.

The problem is, cast iron pipes crack and rust as time passes.Waterworks replaced the old pipe with new ductile iron. It's a kind of iron mixed in a small amount of magnesium metal, a change that makes the pipes much better able to resist corrosion.
