A quick recap on the delivery experience is that they really should just wait until the car is actually at a store ready to pick up (or on a truck on its way to someone’s home for a home delivery), and doing so would save a ton of customer grief. Our Model X is a 90D in Deep Metallic Blue with stock 20” wheels and tires, black leather interior with the light headliner, seven seats, Autopilot, the Premium upgrade package, air suspension, the accessory hitch, and the 72A charging system upgrade. Overall, the Model X is so far the best car I’ve ever had, with the previous holder of that title being my Mercedes CLK AMG 55 Cabriolet that I sold a little over a week before the delivery (sold, not traded in, because Tesla offered a dismal amount for trade-in). I’ll do the cons first…I’m trying to be honest and balanced here, so please hold your down votes to the end if you have any. Cons in no particular order, and with the caveat that although there are many, I don’t consider any of them serious:
It would be fantastic if the middle seats folded flat or were removable. I can live without this, but it would be nice anyway. The rear seats can be difficult to get into for older and shorter passengers if they don’t realize that a) they can stand all the way up with the FWDs open and b) they understand that they can step on the entryway even though it is shiny and nice looking. The sensor on the rear trunk missed an overhead beam in a parking garage once, resulting in a small scratch on my spoiler. (EDIT: This appears to have been more my fault, there's a way to stop it that I tried and failed to do, and you can also set it to open a little less) It sort of seems like a miss that you can’t open the front doors with the key fob. They’re either automatic or manual. The automatic door is a little overzealous, particularly if you’re doing something like washing the car or puttering around the garage with the fob in your pocket. I know I can take it out, obviously, but maybe if I were to close the door once without getting in, it could leave the door manual until I leave the vicinity and return again.
It similarly seems like a miss that you can’t open and close the frunk all the way with the fob like you can the rear trunk. Also on the frunk, the way you have to manually close it - by pushing down on to points equidistant from the center of the front line of the hood - is not optimal, particularly if you’ve been driving through an area that results in a lot of bugs on your hood. I shouldn’t have to wear gloves to close my hood. The sun visors are vertically not very tall. This turns out not to be a huge issue, and overall I’m no more blinded driving the Model X with its gargantuan front windshield than I’ve been in any other car I’ve had. There IS a “doubling” effect on distant lights at night. I had not even noticed it until I read about it here first and then I looked at it and thought “Oh. Honestly it makes zero difference to night driving even though ideally it wouldn’t be there, but I’m not sure what the fix would be. On plastic cover under the driver’s side seat came off when I first moved the seat forward.
It clipped right back on and has stayed on since. We seem to have a potential issue where sometimes the front doors don’t quite close. I think I have narrowed it down to happening because when the air cleaner is in bioweapon defense mode, the positive pressure of the system prevents them from closing all the way…still debugging it. If my diagnosis is correct, this should be repairable in software (on my Mercedes, the windows would roll down a bit and then roll up once the door was closed properly…that would be doable in software with the current hardware and would solve an overpressure issue). (EDIT: At least one person thinks it should be doing that thing with the window, so I'll be checking in with a service center to ask them about it) My FWDs have so far been trouble-free except they’re not awesome at detecting a person standing there, and unfortunately neither am I. I have bopped a few relatives, although there have been no serious injuries or damage to the car.
The audio touchscreen software seems like it could be better, in particular the radio having only six presets. I now use the scrollable list of favorites instead, but it’s a little more clunky. There is room for at least a couple dozen presets, and I have eclectic music taste. All that glass is a bit of a pain to keep clean (first world problem) Pros, in no particular order: It is faster, and thus more fun to drive, than my previous car (which was already pretty fast). Even half-accelerating is enough to get a joyful reaction out of passengers. Passenger and cargo capacity is excellent. First thing we did was drive seven people and all their luggage a few hundred miles to Disneyland, and everyone was so comfortable that they fell asleep pretty much the whole way. The interior is nicer, and more comfortable, than my Mercedes (which had their optional top-of-the-line “designo” edition interior). Lots of cupholders and USB ports. Phone pairing works well and the acoustics are good, I've even done work meetings inside the car.
I'm not an audiophile (or one of those "I must shake the car next to me with my overdriven bass in order for me to feel good about my genitals" guys), but the standard audio is more than fine for my needs. Bioweapon defense mode works well, even in the cattle corridor along I-5 in California. Charging is a breeze, and I couldn’t be much happier about going nowhere near gasoline. Although I understand the appearance is a little polarizing, I love the way the car looks and I get compliments and questions on it wherever we go. There have been four software updates in the month I’ve had it. I love that my car is getting better over time without me spending another dime. Autopilot Notes (with the understanding that it’s Beta, these are both pros and cons and the cons seem largely addressable in software): It works fairly well overall where it works, which is most places I have driven. Earlier on automated lane changes were pretty abrupt/jerky, but with the last couple of software updates they feel smoother.
The hiccups where it makes a mistake sometimes are a little scary, and can be surprising, but are of course recoverable so far. I have had the car apply brakes as if a car was entering my lane when said car was only close to the lane. I wish the software kept better track of miles traveled, charging, etc. in a user-accessible way - the info that Musk revealed about the Model S where a reporter was bashing the car and allegedly ran out of charge unexpectedly would be nice to have available. I wish there were more apps for the touchscreen, like the ones at TeslaApps.net but where I don’t have to give personal details to yet another company to use. As noted above, I wish the second row seats folded flat and/or were removable. That’s about it in terms of what I can think of - TL;DR: I recommend the car highly to anyone that asks, it has no notable defects and is better than I expected (and I feel like I had pretty high expectations). π Rendered by PID 22848 on app-571 at 2016-08-29 09:49:52.960477+00:00 running e331ebd country code: US.
