Yamaha like everyone else had to come up with an engine that would comply with these new restrictions. With 4-stroke engines meeting these regulations much more easily, Yamaha took the already well-loved YZ line, rebuilt it with a 4-stroke motor, and re-named it to YZ-F. The YZ-F is Yamaha’s supercross bike featuring a close gear ratio transmission and harder suspension than the WR-F. Built specifically for tracks, it has no lights or electric start, and is for off-road use only. It is comparable to Suzuki’s RM-Z line and Honda’s CRF-R models.

Comparable to Honda’s CRF-X models, the WR-F is Yamaha’s enduro or trail bike. It is basically the same bike as the YZ-F but has a headlight, taillight, softer suspension than the YZ-F, and a wide gear ratio transmission.
