(PIX11) -- A series of crime scenes here in New Jersey's largest city, all apparently committed by the same man, left a state trooper in the hospital and his fellow officers searching for the suspect. It started around 6:00 A.M., when a man tried to steal a Chevy Tahoe SUV from an Alamo rental car lot that's right next to the landmark Anheuser-Busch plant. The man rammed the SUV into a convertible Ford Mustang and other high-end rental cars as he tried to flee the lot, and as he attempted, apparently unsuccessfully, to avoid being shot by the security guard on the premises.

That guard, who is an off-duty police officer from Lumberton, New Jersey, opened fire on the car thief, who managed to run off as more cops arrived. He managed to steal a silver Chevy Malibu nearby, which he drove about a mile away to Freylinghausen Avenue. There, according to state troopers, a state police detective spotted the man and tried to stop him. The stolen car ended up colliding with the trooper's vehicle, injuring the state police officer. That state trooper, whose name and condition have not been officially released, suffered multiple injuries from the crash, including head injuries. Police sources tell PIX11 News that he will be okay. The same may not be the case for the car thief. He drove another four miles in the Chevy Malibu he stole, but came to an abrupt halt when he hit a tree on 11th Street, near 9th Avenue, before 8:00 A.M. Police put handcuffs on a man at the scene and placed him in a cruiser, but he was not the driver of the stolen car. State police would not confirm if the man taken into custody was placed under arrest, let alone whether or not he was an accomplice.

What was certain, though, is what an eyewitness who lives right at the final crash scene said. "Here, here, right here in front of the garbage," said Lia Smith, who lives on 11th Street, as she pointed to a trail of drops of blood on the sidewalk that appeared to have come from the car thief's body. "He was hurt," Smith said. "So I'm sure he'll be checking in [to a hospital] somewhere. I'm confident, because the state troopers are handling it. They'll do their job and catch him." State police appear to feel the same way.
